McKeever School Gets New Address...

If you happen to go out west of Alva (Oklahoma) on hwy 64 looking for the Old McKeevers School building, You won't find anything except the foundation and basement.

The McKeever School house has been moved to the NWOSU campus just south and west of the President's residence.

Oakie's NW Corner...

The Fall Foliage has started to turn in NW Oklahoma. Some parts of the State have been experiencing tornadoes and watches the last few days... especially in the central and southern parts of Oklahoma. Other than that, the cool, Fall weather is amongst us.

A few weeks ago the farmers got their winter wheat into the ground and as you drive the rural connections between towns you can see the green popping up in rows in the fields.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) is celebrating their annual Cinderella pageant & Homecoming. Their Big Homecoming parade is schedule for around 10:00am this Saturday morning, October 13. I love Parades! I remember back when I was just a young thing and the Homecoming Parade started up at the campus and made it's way down College Avenue -- around the square and ended at WAshington school. You could expect 30 or 40 or more bands and fantastic floats - and a big entertainer show setup in the gymnasium. The Big Shows are gone now and the bands have shrunk from 40 to 17. AND.... I've gotten older!!! hahaha... BUT... I still love parades, marching bands and seeing the streets in downtown Alva come alive again even if it is for holidays and homecoming parades.

If you are one of the thousands of citizens in Downtown Alva (Oklahoma) Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, maybe we will see each other on the square.

NWOSU campus bldgSpeaking of NWOSU... While I was up taking some pictures of the McKeever Schoolhouse, I snapped this shot of one of the buildings on campus. Back in 1953 I attended kindergarten when this building housed the Old Horace Mann Elementary School. Are there any Horace Mann Alumni out there? Got any stories to tell? Just Email Oakie and send me those old pictures (jpeg files). Thanks!

Besides enjoying the Fall weather in my neck of the woods, I have been what some might call "bonding" -- laying my hands on my 6-month filly colt. Now you want something soft to the touch... feel the soft, fuzz of a little colt. As to my gelding (Moon), he is back from boarding school and being ridden everyday by a different trainer and showing some of his extraordinary traits. Horses... They have such a calming effect on the soul. I just love them all! If you are interesting in the status of Oakie's quarterhorses, just click the little blue link... Oakie's Quarterhorses.

As I leave you for now, don't forget next weekend when Cherokee (Oklahoma) Centennial has a big birthday celebration for it's 100th Birthday -- Oct. 19, 20, & 21st. Check out their Chamber of Commerce website for more details... Cherokee Chamber of Commerce.

Letter About Afghanistan... "Linda, One of my high-school class mates recently wrote a letter to her friends, which I will share with you in the following 5 or 6 e-mail messages. I asked her if she would permit me to share it with you. Please peruse it and let me know if you want to use it - or any part of it. She has also given permission to edit it in any way necessary. It is taken from her original script which was handwritten. Let me know what you think but this is not to influence whether you use it or not. I was impressed with the account which gives an insight into what kind of life the people of Afghanistan endured at that time. Sorry but she gives no reference to time."

Send a Card of Thanks... "Shirley's son is a firefighter in NYC working at the World Trade Center. Carolyn's fiance is also a firefighter working at the WTC. These men work 24 hour shifts.
Carolyn's fiance is trained in search and rescue so he is one of the firefighters who has gone and is going into the cracks and crevices, looking for victims as he prayed for survivors. Believe me when I tell you they have both seen horrors we could not even imagine.
Take your worst nightmare and you still would not be able to imagine the horror. I have been asking Shirley and Carolyn to ask these guys what they need. Something that is not publicized.
But, as you know, they have all the supplies they need for now so until they need more I will have to think of something else. BUT I WANT TO DO SOMETHING!!
On the news, they are saying that the firemen are getting discouraged because they are finding hardly anyone. They leave out the part about the horrific conditions and sights they see, But through it all, they go on... and on... and on... and on.
     So here is my idea... Let's start a Card Writing Campaign. Go out to your local Hallmark or wherever it is you buy your greeting cards. Buy a card that reflects what your feelings are about their heroic efforts and send it to them at: NYC Fire Department, 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza;
New York, NY 10005
Just think how powerful this message can be. If all of you send this e-mail to everyone you know, and they send it to everyone they know. If all of the people who get this note send a card, we can be the start of a miracle. Kind of like... when the Post Office delivers all the mail addressed to Santa to Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street.
Let's start our own miracle... Let's show these brave men how we feel about them. They need our love, support and encouragement. DO IT, DO IT, DO IT... send those cards!"

I'm making a calendar for Larry with a different courthouse each month. I just happen to have a few pictures from counties that you don't have, so I'm sending them to you. You have some I don't have, but I have enough for my 2002 calendar as I used a lot of Kansas courthouses."
