A '60 Texas Size Hat...

1960 clipping of Democratic convention hatI was rummaging through some old photos the other day and ran across this news clipping that was taken during the Summer of 1960, at the Los Angeles Democratic National Convention.
The heading under the picture began "A Texas Size Hat...." and goes on to read... "surrounded by Oklahomans appeared at the Democratic delegation breakfast in Los Angeles Tuesday morning. The hat is six feet in diameter and was brought to the convention by Keith Kahlo, formerly of Oklahoma City who now heads Central Airlines in Fort Worth. Kahlo is an ardent Lyndon Johnson supporter. Admiring the hat are, left to right, Dorothy, Amber, Connie and Linda McGill [I need to correct the left to right names... It should have read Amber, Connie, Dorthy and Linda McGill], daughters of Gene McGill, Alva, State Chairman."
The gentleman in the middle, I assume is Keith Kahlo.
I remember my dad flew the six of us out to California, in 1960 in his Cessna airplane. It was somewhere over the mountains of Arizona (or California) that I was experiencing the turbulence of the mountains and got sick. Dad opened the door of the airplane to dump the barf-bag over the mountains. One of my sisters shoes got thrown out with that bag, also.
We were packed three in front and three in back as I remember 40+ years ago. I remember sitting up front between Mom and Dad. I'm sure that each of my sisters probably have another version of the same story. BUT... I will let them tell their story -- their way -- from their memories.

Joseph Hurt Family Home...

Joseph Hurt Family & HomeThanks to Alice Shook and Dolly Barr for the great photo of the Joseph Hurt Homestead.
This picture came from Alice Marie Kachel Shook (age 90) via Dolly Shook Barr. Alice is still living in Beaver, Oklahoma. It shows Alice's Uncle Joe Hurt's home, northeast of Chester, Oklahoma, west of Orion Cemetery a couple of miles or so.
Recent PIC of Joe Hurt Home    The picture to the right is a recent photo I took a couple of years ago when I was visiting the old cemetery and homestead of Joseph Hurt, NE of Chester, Oklahoma, located on the Betty Martin farm.
Joseph (listed as #9 in the photo ) is standing in the middle with the white suspenders. You can Click the photos above to view the larger versions of the photographs.
Alice's Uncle Joe was my Grandmother's (Mary Barbara Hurt Paris) father (Joseph P. Hurt). Which (I think) would make him my Great-Grandpa Joe. Joe's father is listed as #14, Grandpa John Hurt, sitting on the right side near #18, Grandma Anna Hurt.
As to the rest of the family... Beginning with #1, my grandmother, Mary Hurt (Paris) and going from left to right to #18...

      1. Mary Hurt (Paris); 2. Mabel Kachel; 3. Carrie Holub; 4. Tillie Hurt (Hamilton); 5. Tena Holub; 6. Jim Holub; 7. Clara Hurt; 8. Albert Kachel; 9. Joe Hurt (Alice's uncle & My G-Grandpa); 10. ?; 11. Anna Holub; 12. Little John Hurt; 13. Dora Hurt (In arms); 14. Grandpa John Hurt; 15. Grandma Kachel-Hurt; 16. Henry Kachel; 17. Oakie's NW Corner...

Chimeny Rock Mural, Alva Bowl mural Murals are mulitipling in twos in Alva, OK.
This Chimney Rock mural painted on the east side of the Alva Bowl, on US64 (Okla. Blvd), in Alva, greeted me as I was headed west on Oklahoma Blvd. tpwards town this week.
Gleaner Harvesting mural, Alva, OK    If you take a right turn off of US64 (Okla. Blvd) onto 4th and take it all the way downtown to Barnes Ave., on the SE corner is this "Gleaner Harvesting" mural painted on the westside of the Devery Implement building.

Motorola Radio Matchbook w/two matches inside   As to something old...  I found this old match book cover with two matches still intact on the inside with the following ad for the "Golden Voice Motorola Radio for Home and Car." It was with some old WWII medals of my Uncle Bob's.
Does anyone out there remember these match books about the 1940s? Can you help me date them.

As I write this newsletter this week, my bags are being packed for a few days of vacation to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary (July 30th). We are off to the Cool Rockies. Kind of sounds like I'm becoming one of the "Okies" that headed west in the 1930s, huh? BUT... I keep coming back! I will always come back to my home!
Towards the later half of this week we did get a bit of a reprieve from the Summer heatwave... After Thursday evening the temperatures dropped back down to two-digits in the NW part of the state and they say there might be a 50% chance of rain on Saturday. BUT... watch out for those three-digit temps to arrive on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc..

Hellman & Behel.... "I just stumbled on to this site. My dad's family is from Alva - Hellman & Behel. If this eZine has information about Alva history, I'd like to subscribe." -- Linda Manaugh

Robinson, Oklahoma Inquiry... "As told by family members that James Franklin Mcgehee was born 7/1901 in the above town. Do you know any history of the town?" -- MHubbard

As To Robinson, OK Inquiry... "Linda, Sorry but it seems that there is no such place as Robinson, Oklahoma according to the book entitled 'Oklahoma Place Names' by Gorge Shirk, but does show a place by the name of Robberson that is located in southwestern Garvin County, 8 miles southwest of Elmore City. A post office from June 11, 1890, to April 19, 1924. Named for William F. Robberson. merchant and early-day settler. Also in checking the book entitled 'Town and Place Locations' [revised 4-15-75], published by the Oklahoma Department of Highways does not list a Robinson Oklahoma but does show a 'Robinson Corner' which is in Marshall County, Sec 32-Twp 5S-Rge 7E.
I should suggest that if this is in fact, the place that is being sought it probably will be necessary to acquire a Marshall County map from the Okla. Department of Transportation - these type maps are usually detailed. If you need assistance in acquiring such a map, may I suggest that contact be made with a State Senator or Representative you may know and let them get the map for you. I find no reference to a Robinson Oklahoma per se." -- Ernest

Looking For Family Historian.... "Like many, I did not take advantage while my grandparents were still around. Muriel Gertrude McCutchen was born in Udall, Kansas in 1903. Her husband is listed below. I have many relatives in northeast and the panhandle in Oklahoma. I am told that my great-great grandparents were massacred by the indians in mid 1800's. Am trying to locate the family historian. My grandparents settled in Satanta, KS and were independently wealthy, so the story goes. In the '30's all was lost in the "dust bowl." They traveled through the west and after a long odyssey, the settled in Moses Lake, WA. Both are buried in Vancouver, WA. She died in 1967 and he in 1984. Thanks!" -- Mike Hubbard

John F. PAGE... "born about 1860 in Iowa. Enlisted in Troop D, 1st US Vol. Cav. (Rough Riders) at Alva, O.T. and was discharged 'per verbal order of Genl. Wood' in August, 1898. Does anyone have any information on this person in Alva before or after 1898?" -- rwcrawf

Oops! I've been Hoaxed Story.... "Linda, don't beat yourself over the head for being duped by a so called 'lie'... The story may not have been true, but it was still an inspirational thought. I believe that is really the point of the story. Hey, I still like to hear the story about George Washington & the Cherry tree." -- Ernest

Putzke & Elstra.... "Hello! I have also Putzke ancestors in my family tree. The town Elstra is not far away from Gelenau. The correct name is Frederike: Christiane Frederike Putzke. Greetings from Germany." -- Peter Meier, Peter's Homepage

"Best magazine yet, Linda... Keep up the good work." -- Ed

Captain Morgan's Retreat... "...on Ambergris Caye, Belize. If you get a chance and some time, check out the site. Look at some of the pictures and then find Captain Morgan's Retreat site. That's where they filmed Temptation Island last year for showing this spring. I think we will really enjoy this trip. We will be there for our 5th anniversary, and it will be our third time to the Caribbean. If you've never been there, it's the best! I also wanted to tell you how much my father enjoys the newsletter. You do such a great job with it. Keep up the great work and write when you get a chance. Take care." -- CB
