Old Lacy School Bell...

Have you ever driven by some place, building, or historic marker on your way to somewhere else and say to yourself, "I should have stopped and taken a photo of that!"
That happens to me alot lately. BUT... I finally stopped and took the time to get this snapshot of an Oklahoma bell for a friend this week as I drove through downtown Kingfisher, Oklahoma.
Kingfisher County Bell    I have driven through Kingfisher many times and have noticed the bell... telling myself I should have stopped and taken a picture of that. This time I made the time!
The monument & bell that graces the west side of the county courthouse has this great old bell that once hung at the old Lacy school. The bell found a new home in 1976 at the Kingfisher County Bicentennial. It is mounted atop the monument's brick wall on the west side of the Kingfisher Courthouse.
Marker, Kingfisher Co., Bell         The inscription on the historic marker reads as follows,...
"Kingfisher County
1776 Bicentennial 1976
Memorial monument
Dedicated to all Generations
A past to remember - A future to hold - And God to Glorify. Memoralizing: those who gave their lives
for our freedom. The farmer - He feeds the world. The Bell - Proclaiming freedom throughout the land. (LEVITICUS XXV:10)"
If you get the chance, Take the time! Take that photo and send me a copy with a little note of what, where, when, etc...
Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts, ideas and correspondence.

Freedom, Lights, Camera, Action...

A few weeks ago (June 11, 2001) the western community of Freedom, Oklahoma experienced a boom in the population of their main streets for a couple of weeks.
As the local Freedom Call newspaper put it, "The Sandlot Pictures of Cincinnati, Ohio spent the last two weeks in northwestern Oklahoma filming on location at various sites, including the Freedom Depot."
If you have never been to Freedom, in northwest Oklahoma, you are missing something really special. Now here's a small old-time western styled community of "postive, energetic citizens with lots of persistence to capitalize on their strengths and improve on their weaknesses" as they look towards the future together. As they exclaim in Freedom and The Freedom Call, "Volunteerism is alive and well in Freedom!"
The Old Cattlemen's Cafe is getting a mural painted on the west side of the building to illustrate what the rodeo grand stands were like years ago. The east side of the Corner Grocery has a mural depicting the Cheyenne camp and the Battle of Turkey Springs.
As to the film crew that came to town... The Jesse Chisholm filming crew visited Freedom on Monday, June 11, to use Freedom's Restored Depot to shoot a town scene for the "Jesse Chisholm Documentary." The completion date for the documentary is set for sometime in the summer of 2002 for the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, Oklahoma.

Oakie's NW Corner...

Well! Does anyone know where the month of June has gone? Tomorrow, Saturday, is the last day as we round the corner into firework displays and Independence Day celebrations going off across the NW corner of Oklahoma and around the state.

Cumbres & Toltec Line... "Read your report on the Durango/Silverton Train. Have you checked out the Cumbres and Toltec, which runs between Chama, NM and Antonita, CO. Several years ago, we did the Cumbres one year, then went to Durango and went back to the Cumbres and Toltec. The Cumbres was originally a part of the Denver and Rio Grande line which ran from Denver thru Antonita / Chama and on into Durango and Silverton. Had I not ridden the Cumbres prior to my ride on the Durango / Silverton train, I possibly would have enjoyed the Durango ride more. Google lists a number of websites for the Cumbres and Toltec line & Cumbres Toltec.org. Again, thanks for your help and also for your weekly ezine." -- Marvin

Packages... The man whispered, 'God, speak to me.' and a meadowlark sang. But,the man did not hear. So the man yelled 'God, speak to me!' And, thunder rolled across the sky. But, the man did not listen. The man looked around and said, 'God let me see you.'And a star shined brightly. But the man did not notice. And the man shouted, 'God show me a miracle!' And a life was born. But, the man did not know. So, the man cried out in despair, 'Touch me God, and let me know you are here!' Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man. But the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on. Don't miss out on a blessing because it isn't packaged the way that you expect."

75th Anniversary of Route 66... To some it may be only a road, but for many, US66 is a direct link to the times of their lives.
