This, That & Superstitions

"Superstitions stem from beliefs or practices that man has used, or continues to use, to explain events that are beyond his control, in a world where events are often difficult to understand. It is only when factual evidence is found and a belief disproved, that it becomes a superstition if people continue to cling to the idea. Therefore, the beliefs of today, may very well become the superstitions of tomorrow." http://www.arcanamatrix.com/articles/friday13.html

This week as we speak, I settled myself down to write another newsletter on this Friday the 13th with the belief that it is just another day and will become whatever I make it (Full Moon and all). I'm not a superstitious person. I only read about other's superstitions to try to understand and see from where their thinking derives. How many have said, "They are not superstitious!"... BUT yet they carry around a rabbit's foot (or lucky charm) for good luck?

The Oklahoma Sooners weren't superstitious last weekend when they managed to defeat Texas, 63-14. With last weeks Oklahoma football win down in Dallas, the "Blooming Boomer Sooner Fans" were seen for miles traveling northward (back home) on I35, Sunday afternoon sporting messages written on their back windshields that read, "OU 63 - Texas 14!" The traffic didn't get much higher than 55mph on the Interstate last Sunday if you were headed north towards Oklahoma.

The only reason this Oakie ventured on I35 was to get some pictures of parts of the areas around Turner Falls that burned September, 2000, a few weeks ago. If you have the latest version (#7) of "Windows Media Player", then click on the link to view a collection of still photos that I took along hwy 77 that runs along Turner Falls, in Southern Oklahoma. You do need the "Windows Media Player" to view this short movie file.

October 7, 2000, was a great week for this Oakie. We got over an inch of rain at Fairvalley, in NW Oklahoma. I also got a chance to catch up with my two horses, Cindy & Moon, in NW Oklahoma. The weather was a bit cooler than it has been and the horses were busily chomping their alfalfa hay when I strolled into their NW Oklahoma Territory.

Cindy had her ears laid back as if she was going to pout a little since it has been awhile since we've laid eyes on each other. BUT... They soon perked up (Cindy & her ears). I did happen to get some updated pictures of my almost 6 month old colt (Okie Moon, a.k.a Moon) and his mother (Cindy). And maybe I do bragg a bit too much at times, but I will try to keep myself to the minimum here. I do have to say that, "Okie Moon is turning into a beautiful dark horse and getting a bit fat on the hay."

You can view the updated photos on my NetDrive Photo Album by cruising over to my "pictures" and scrolling down to "horses".

That last week also brought some great photos my youngest son took while we were in Colorado, during the middle of September 2000. The four photos are views around Ouray & Box Canyon Falls, Colorado. I particularly like the scene where he is looking down into Ouray and catches a glimpse of the parking lot and a view of us getting something out of our vehicles. The photo is outlined & framed through the branches of the trees from high atop one of the mountain climbs at Box Canyon Falls. Another shot I especially love is looking through a crevice of Box Canyon Falls at the view of the mountains and trees. It's as if the darkness of the sides of the canyon walls give the view of beyond a natural, nature's frame to enhance the beauty of this area.

Before I leave you this week... I want to extend my congratulations to the NEW owners of "The Freedom Call", in Freedom, Oklahoma. I really do admirer Donna Hodgson and Pebbles Luddington for taking on the responsibility of keeping Freedom's 95 year-old newspaper alive. I know they both will do a great job. I wish them all the best and hope that the town of Freedom will get behind them and help Freedom's Newspaper reach it's 100th birthday celebration in another five years.

Yes! I was thinking about buying and publishing "The Freedom Call." No! I did not buy it! This Oakie Eagle found another byway to soar for the next Millennium (2001). Be sure and watch the skies, byways and thorough-fares for this "Fair Valley Eagle" as she ventures on down the roads that connect us all together... As Oakie might say, "Spreading Country News from across the Countryside."

Castle on the Hill WatercolorLet me leave you with a special computer-generated watercolour that I made of the March, 1935 photograph that my grandmother had stored in her collectibles. Y'all have a great weekend and make it one of your best. All you Northwestern Alumni College graduates out there preparing for homecoming the 26th thru the 28th of October.

This one is for you!

o OAKIE'S MAILBAG/LINKS

"Yahoo entered the Web voice fray Tuesday with the launch of a free telephone service allowing users to call and have their e-mail, news and other information read to them. Using Net2Phone's (NTOP: news, chart) voice-optimized Internet protocol network, users of Yahoo by Phone will initially be required to enter numbers on a touch tone telephone to select the information they want to hear. A computer-generated electronic voice will read the mail or other information."

Friday the 13th Origins -- "The following Friday morning, alert to their secret instructions, armies of officials slipped out of their barracks. By sundown nearly all the Knights Templar throughout France were in jails. One estimate puts the arrests at two thousand, another as high as five thousand. Only twenty escaped. The initial charges were vague, but they didn't sound good: "A bitter thing, a lamentable thing, a thing horrible to think of and terrible to hear, a detestable crime, an execrable evil, an abominable act, a repulsive disgrace, a thing almost inhuman, indeed alien to all humanity, has, thanks to the reports of several trustworthy persons, reached our ear, smiting us grievously and causing us to tremble with the utmost horror." What followed was so foul, according to folklore, that Templar sympathizers cursed the day itself, condemning it as evil--Friday the thirteenth--whose reputation never recovered."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Superstition Behind Friday the 13th -- "The luck or unluck of any given number resides solely in the mind of the person, and within the realm of the boogie man. All the superstitions built up around Friday the 13th were political maneuvers, largely on the part of Christian religious leaders (but most definitely not the only offenders), to divert their followers minds from other spiritual paths."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Superstitions that surround Friday have been buzzing about since the Ancient Romans dedicated the sixth day to their goddess Venus. The Norsemen, when naming their days, followed the Roman tradition, and named the day after their own goddess, Freya. This eventually evolved into Friday and was considered to be the luckiest day of the week..... Superstitions stem from beliefs or practices that man has used, or continues to use, to explain events that are beyond his control, in a world where events are often difficult to understand. It is only when factual evidence is found and a belief disproved, that it becomes a superstition if people continue to cling to the idea. Therefore, the beliefs of today, may very well become the superstitions of tomorrow."
