"As I step from plank to plank, slowly, cautiously -- I breathe
and feel the sky, air about my head -- And the dry, heartlands prairie
about my feet. -- I know not what the next road/path will bring our
way -- Or when the final inch will be, -- But I wait with open mind,
heart and anticipation -- With this precarious gait that some call
experience. Hoping and praying that the rain will again come -- Plummeting
down upon our fields of dreams once again." -- (LK
Wagner, 6 Oct. 2000)
And... We do need the rain on our dry, heartland prairies to fill
our dwindling farm ponds that water our livestock and give us a place
to relax and catch a fish story or two. Our farmers here in Oklahoma
have been dusting their seeds into their farm fields. We haven't had
rain for over 60 days now. With this cold front that came through
Thursday (October 6th), they say we have a chance this weekend
across the northern areas of the state and reaching down towards the
central part.
Our SW Oklahoma farmers have been hit the worst with the extreme
summer-like drought temperatures peeking into September yet. It Is
So Dry That... The farmers and ranchers are having to dig into their
winter reserve of hay to supplement the feeding of their livestock
during these dry spells. I wouldn't be too surprised if hay prices
sky-rocket. Big Semi-trucks have been seen going back and forth between
Texas and Oklahoma transporting tons of hay to the Texas ranchers,
also.
Overworked, dedicated and very much appreciated firefighters have
been squelching grass fires from west to east, north to south across
the Heartland prairies. What we need now is a good soaking rain to
refill the farm ponds; moisten the seeds put into the ground for the
winter; and get back some control of the burn ban the whole state
is under. Where are those rain dancers anyway?
Homecoming Happenings in NW Oklahoma... If you pick up a local
newspaper you might read where small NW Oklahoma communities are celebrating
their homecomings. Selecting homecoming queens to participate in NWOSU's
Cinderella Coronation, October 26 thru 27, 2000. During the week of
October 23rd to October 28th, in Alva, decorations, floats, etc. will
be coming together for Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU)
Annual Homecoming & Cinderella Coronation, Oct. 26th thru 28th.
They still line the sidewalks around the downtown square as crowds
gather to view the bands, floats, homecoming queens, clowns & politicians.
The Old Time BIG Show with big name stars has been replaced with the
Cinderella Coronation on Thursday & Friday. Saturday morning, October
28th, 2000, the downtown streets of Alva will again be alive and overflowing
with spectators from 10:00a.m to Noon as the hour-long parade of floats,
bands, political dignitaries, children on bikes, clowns, homecoming
queens, etc. march around the two-block square from the Old Armory
building and end up with a Bar-b-cue and band concert on the downtown
park square.
The Cinderella Coronation selects the "Miss Cinderella" from a list
of high school homecoming queens from around the NW area. I still
love and remember the big celebrations of past years as the beat of
the school bands, hundreds of beautiful floats, old cars, the afternoon
football rivalries, and getting together with dear friends. Maybe
I'll see you there... Drinking a chocolate soda in at Holders! Remember...
And mark your calendars for October 26 thru 28, 2000, in Alva, Oklahoma!
Late Breakin' Ghost Town News from another reader.... "You
probably already know, but Teagarden, Oklahoma was right across the
highway from Whitehorse, Oklahoma. Do you know anything about Pratt,
Oklahoma, all I know is... it had a saloon, some stores and possibly
a hotel, however I am not sure of any of this. It was about a mile
and a half west of the old Farry school or 3 miles north of highway
64 on the Farry road and then about a half mile west, which is a wheat
field now. Some other old ghost towns and some of them might be over
the line in Kansas, but they are Winchester, Yellowstone and I think
it was Rose Hill. This is all that I know about any of them."
All you OU & OSU football fans... This weekend (Oct. 8th)
the infamous OU/Texas rivalry is being held down in Dallas this year.
When we were brief Texans for the years '75 thru '80, our Texas friends
would gather with us Okies and we'd brew up some "God Awful Hot
Chili". That was back when OU always seemed to get beat by Texas
and embarrassed us in front of our Texas friends something awful.
BUT... This year looks GREAT for the Oklahoma Football Team! Don't
forget about our other Oklahoma team at Stillwater... OSU travels
to Columbia, Missouri this weekend to do battle.
Wherever you travel this Oct. 8th weekend, please be safe and buckle-up.
If you drink, Do NOT drive! Thanks! See you all safely next weekend
in my new "Specs" (glasses)!

"Hello there from state of Washington. I'm still searching for the
Hurts. Namely Bessie Hurt, there are two. There are two Bessie Hurts
listed as marrying in Howard County. One married Frank Budneck (spelled
also Budnek) and the other married Jospeh Ruzicka. I have found
this weekend a Frank Budnek who was on Los Angeles, Calif. death records
thru internet and a Elizabeth Budnek. I think this is my Great Aunt
as she was to have moved to LA after they married in Nebr. I believe
the info did say they were both born in Nebr. It would be nice to
get their death Certificates for more info as informant maybe could
tell more if living yet. California takes forever to send out their
death certificates though. My grandmother on dad's side died there
it took over six months to get her certificate back. I'm not sure
they will even send me a certificate as I would be Bessie and Franks
Great niece. Other names I research is Huddleston some moved to Ada,
Potontoc County, OK and died there, married into Bradford, Sherrill,
Wheeler. Elder, Price McClellan, Fauntleroy lines to name a few. Rasmussen,
Nielsen, Kirby, on dad's side from Nebr, Valley County. Hurt, Bonczynski,
Cynova, Poskocil on mom's side all from Sherman & Howard Co, Neb.
Many of course have moved away from Nebr." MK

want to learn about the history of the Allen family. She says that
her great-grandfather - Carl Allen came to Albuquerque, NM and died
of TB shortly after he arrived. He died in June 1922. She said he
was from Waynoka, Oklahoma, Woods County. Any help is appreciated.
I will pass along the info to her. Thanks." Shannon

need RAISES and MORE MAN POWER. How about a school that has to share
