Vol. 2, Issue 57 -- 6 May 2000
I'm back in Oklahoma and looking for some histories that aren't there
anymore! The never-ending search that we all seek -- trying to understand
and learn the lessons of our past that lead us on this never-ending road
of self-worth and discovery.
Its good to be back in Oklahoma where they say, "The wavin' wheat can
sure smell sweet when the wind comes right behind the rain ...And... The
corn is as high as an elephants eye!" How high is an elephants eye, anyway?
Traveling on... When we reached the NE border of Oklahoma we headed
south through the mountains in eastern Oklahoma. Stop- ping to view
the vista turn-outs! Specifically, the Winding Stairs National Forest
in LeFlore County, SE Oklahoma (SH 1).
The views from atop our Oklahoma mountains are breath taking. Another
part of God's Country! Where you can see for miles and miles and miles
and forever! A site to savor and bring your cameras! The mixture of
Oaks, Maples, cedars trees, etc... give a beautiful texture of colors
at the different vistas (or far away views). These are some of
the Vistas seen from Talimena Drive, LeFlore Co., Oklahoma, April 28,
2000... LeFlore/index.html
To continue... We didn't take our 15 year old miniature Dachshund
with us to Missouri on our Research/Easter trip. She stayed with her
friend, Daisy (4-year-old miniature schnauzer). I really enjoy
the fascinating little dogs stories that come out of those over-nighters.
Especially, since the dogs have ceased being a family pet and have become
more like a family member. They (the dogs) have their own little
ways of establishing communi- cations with you and each other. At times
it seems they even understand the English language. You know what I
mean?
Why I brought this up is... I have a couple of those dog stories
that I would like to share with you. If you have any dog stories to
share, please Email Oakie.
"This is really a Spring for the first time in many years. The sun is
shining, it isn't unreasonably warm, and there is just a nice light breeze.
Even Rosie scoots while we are out. I was watching the news and reading
the paper yesterday evening at the time that Rosie thought food should
be on the floor (as opposed to on the table). She had bounced and
whined and told on me to Daisy. Daisy joined in with hopping... running...
jumping over Rosie. But, damn-it! I'm the human here and I'm bigger than
both of them and they hadn't had breakfast until after 11:00 and had been
given a treat in mid afternoon and they weren't starving regardless of
what they wanted me to think. All of a sudden comes this terrible clatter!!!
Down the tile hallway... I lean around and it is Rosie with her nose in
Daisy's bowl, driving it down the hall toward me! All right... all right...
all right. I fed them."
"This morning, after we had been out and walked awhile, we came in and
I poured food in Rosie's bowl. She and Daisy stood, on point, looking
at her food. I got Daisy's food and poured some in her bowl. They looked
at their bowls, looked at me, looked at each other, looked at me ...
neither of them eating. I walked around into computer corner and turned
on MagMach and finally heard the sound of two dogs chowing down... Daisy
on Rosie's food and Rosie on Daisy's. Who said the grass isn't greener
on the other side of the fence?" -- The Babysitter.
OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD VOTE (Sept. 17, 1907)...
While we were in St. Louis looking up news articles concerning the
St. Louis Browns of 1907, I run onto the the following article that
ran on the front page of the "St. Louis Daily Globe-Democrat," Sept.
16, 1907 and continued on page ten. It had to do with the upcoming Vote
of the State Charter, Prohibition, Statehood, etc... to be voted on
by the voters of Oklahoma & Indian Territory September 17, 1907.

Besides Baseball in Southern Texas & Missouri; the land runs
of 1889 & 1893 and the teeming Oil fields of the 1890s... Oklahoma
& Indian Territories were booming with people flocking to the territories
to make their fortunes and stake their claims. Carry Nation was stomping
in from Kansas trying to rid our towns of the saloons that seemed to
crop up overnight in many of the communities across these two-territories.
Frank Frantz, a Republican, was the then Territorial Governor
and running for office of governor of the new proposed state (Oklahoma)
against Haskell, a Democrat. There was a Socialist candidate also running,
but he got lost in the campaign fight between Frantz & Haskell.
Each of the Democrat & Republican candidates brought in the big
whigs from the surrounding states to gather the people and the votes.
(Very similar to what they still do today.)
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia - Oklahoma, "Oklahoma
and Indian Territories became a state on 16 November, 1907. On 20 November,
1906, pursuant to the enabling act passed by Congress, the constitutional
convention assembled at Guthrie and closed its labours on 6 July, 1907.
The constitution was adopted by a vote of the people on 17 September,
1907, and at the same
election the officers of the new state were elected. The inauguration
was held in Guthrie on 16 November, 1907."
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11230c.htm
"On September 17, 1907, voters in Oklahoma and Indian territories overwhelmingly
endorsed a proposed state constitution and also approved a separate
prohibition initiative by a narrower 130,361 to 112,258 margin. [124]
Prohibition would have been continued on the lands of Indian Territory
regardless of the vote, as stipulated in the Oklahoma Enabling Act,
approved by Congress the previous year. [125] Nevertheless, every county
in Oklahoma Territory where liquor was permitted that also bordered
"dry" Indian lands, voted for prohibition." -- Whiskey Towns of Oklahoma
Territory -- http://geography.ou.edu/research/whiskey.html
According to the St. Louis Daily Globe-Democrat, dated Oct. 1,
1907, the Headlines read, "Oklahoma Militia Camp Is Burned."
It goes on to report from Fort Reno, Okla., September 30, "Just at the
close of the annual encampment of the Oklahoma National Guard on the
military reservation at this place, a disastrous prairie fire swept
the camp, known as Fort Constitution, and destroyed the greater part
of the equipment of the territorial militia.
The fire is believed to have been of incendiary origin, as it approached
the camp from four different points and was started when the troops
were supposed to have been out on a hunt. Soldiers say they saw a man
on horseback set the fire. The militiamen, seeing their own camp go
up in flames, abandoned
the remains and devoted their efforts to saving Fort Reno. The fire
was checked just after it entered the post fence. Four men from Company
K of Enid were seriously injured. General supplies that were lost amount
approximately to $10,000. Nearly all of the officers lost their personal
effects and the amount of damage will reach $25,000." -- oklahoma/oct1_07FtReno.rtf

STATE SONG - §25-94.1. -- The official song and anthem of the
State of Oklahoma is "Oklahoma," composed and written by Richard
Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
"Brand new state, Brand new state, gonna treat you great!
Gonna give you barley, carrots and pertaters,
Pasture fer the cattle, Spinach and Termayters!
Flowers on the prairie where the June bugs zoom,
Plen'y of air and plen'y of room,
Plen'y of room to swing a rope!
Plen'y of heart and plen'y of hope!
Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain,
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Oklahoma, ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin' lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say - Yeeowþ A-yip-i-o-ee ay!
We're only sayin' You're doin' fine, Oklahoma! Oklahoma - O.K."

QUOTE/POEM OF THE WEEK
"I had a daily bliss
I half indifferent viewed,
Till sudden I perceived it stir,--
It grew as I pursued,
Till when, around a crag,
It wasted from my sight,
Enlarged beyond my utmost scope,
I learned its sweetness right."
