The Legacy of Fathers

Maybe it isn't too late for some of you to sit down and get to know your father. To know him and understand what his life was like growing up. What motivated him to choose the paths he took on his life. Before it is too late and while your father is still around, get to know him and search out those answers to the questions that will be your legacy.

The written words of our father's are bequeathed to us as an important legacy for each of us to learn. Leaving a history of family and hope for the future in our hearts and souls. I am the best part of my father. I am the side that many did not know. I believe that a father is who he is, because we judge him NOT with our eyes... BUT with our hearts unconditionally.

With Father's Day just around the corner I dedicate this newsletter to all fathers out there. Beginning with a letter to my own father who died on Father's Day, June, 1986.

(Letter To A Father)

Dear Father, If you are looking down on this daughter of yours, I hope you like what you see. I have taken the best parts of you and made them into me. Your legacy is always guiding me spiritually.

I hope you don't mind! I have adopted another father figure that reminds me alot of you. He has the same good qualities that I've found in you throughout the years. Now... I have been blessed with two terrific fathers. I am wishing them both a "Happy Father's Day". I love, admire and respect you both... equally.

Through your legacy, you are reflected in the person who now stands in your place - Me. Our true heritage is the talents and strengths that you left in each of your offspring. We were brought up to no longer cry over things that can't cry over us. I shall be a survivor and cherish the fortitude, love and lessons that you (my father) have left unto me.

I am one of those loving daughters that shall choose to remember and understand your life through sharing of your family history, letters, memories and photos that you have bequeathed to me. Although, you aren't with us now, those who truly love you are continuing your spirit and heritage.

There will always be questions that were left unanswered. I still wonder and explore them through what you left behind. We shall seek the knowledge and understanding behind your legacy that you have bequeathed to us. I cherish those moments talking to friends and family -- viewing letters and memories you have given us.

All these things give me an insight to what your childhood life was like. Each piece of the puzzle builds the foundation for the entire legacy you have bequeathed to us. It gives me insight into who you really were -- If you were ever afraid of anything -- What your greatest fear might have been. Some other questions I wish I had paid more attention to while you were still alive were the following questions:

1. What were the 5 important lessons you learned?
2. Did you ever get in fights with other kids?
3. Did you ever start or stop a fight?
4. Who gave you your first job and what was it?
5. What was your favorite pastime or hobby as a child?
6. What mischievous prank did you pull?
7. What were the fads from your school days?
8. Did you participate in them?
9. Who was your favorite teacher?
10. How did they influence your life?
11. List 3 things you wished you had done during your School days?
