A Grandfather's LegacyBaseball -- 1904Will Play IndiansChilocco Team Will Come Here for Baseball GameTwo games of baseball will be played in Wichita on the Fourth of July, and both of them will be of more than ordinary importance. These games have been matched between the Chilocco Indians and a team of local players, E. A. Jones, who was manager of the Friends' University club, will manage the local team. McGill, who has made an excellent record here during his short time in Wichita, will be in the box during one of the games and in the second game there will be another twirler of equal strength. McCully will catch for McGill. The Chilocco club is one of the best in the country, and will doubtless put up a number one game. The team that Mr. Jones is figuring on will also be made up of first-class players. Considering everything, Wichita may expect one of the warmest games of baseball that has ever been given here. Alva The Champions --- The Baseball team pictured here played in the Alva, Greensburg and Hopeton area around the 1904. Listed Left to Right, Front Row: George Brannan, Jess Clifton, the dog, Lynn White, Ramsey; Middle Row: Helena boy, Frank Crowell, Wilhite; Back Row:Museller, Quinlan, Bill McGill, Rolly Wilton, Ross Frazier.
Harper was shut out for the first time this year and it did not sit well on their solar plexus. Batteries -- Bates and McDaniels, McGill and McCulley. In this game Alva put up a perfect game from start to finish and Harper was never in it.
The second game was just as interesting though much poorer played. Both pitchers were hit harder and both teams put up a poorer fielding game. Alva was greatly weakened by the absence of one her strongest men but managed to win out by the following score:
Three base hitm Hamilton. Struck out by Quinlan 10, Davis 9. Harper plays a good game but took defeat very hard as it was entirely unexpected but they ought to be proud of their showing as they were up against the fastest amateur team in Oklahoma. BaseballHarper beat Monday 14 to 1. After the game got well started the "rooters" informed Alva that they had been robbed at Alva and that they had an "umpire worse than Quinlan." The upire showed that that was true so Alva took her pitcher out and played horse to the disgust of the fans in attendance. Aside from taking the game Harper also took all the bats Alva had and the mask. Our boys were well pleased to get away with their suits and one score. Tuesday was a game that would have delighted the hearts of the Alva fans could they have seen it. McGill pitched magnificent ball and everybody played ball behind him. His benders were something marvelous and the Kingman boys thought so too. Hamilton led the hitting, three to his credit, while White got two. Kingman is a swell town to play in as the fans all give the glad hand to a good play.
Struck out McGill 15, Vaughn 9. Ellsworth, KS, Aug 29 -- (Special) Minneapolis and Ellsworth
played the fastest game of ball seen here this year. The Ellsworth team
made a great rally in the ninth, scoring three runs, but it was not
long enough. Both pitchers pitched good ball, McGill striking out eleven
men and Griggs nine. They play here tomorrow and Wesneday.
Batteries -- McGill and Brown; Griggs and Mehl. Ellsworth, KS, Aug. 31 -- (Special) Ellsworth again defeated Minneapolis here today. Kerns, for the home team, played a star game, cutting off several that looked like clean hits. Ellsworth plays at Minneapolis three days this week.
Batteries -- McGill and Brown, Goddearl and Mehl. Minneapolis 1, Ellsworth 0Minneapolis, KS, Sept. 3 -- (Special) Minneapolis made it two out of three from Ellsworth and established a record in amateur baseball today. Only twenty-eight men faced McGill, the Minneapolis pitcher; one man reached first base -- a safe hit by Mehl in the fifth inning -- and not a man reached second. McGill was supported in faultless style, not a sign of an error being made by a Minneapolis man. Goodearl pitched a good game for Ellsworth, but lost his own game by an error in the first inning. It was a great game by the fastest amateur teams seen in Kansas in many a day.
Batteries -- Minneapolis, McGill and Nye; Ellswroth, Foodearl and Mehl. A Fine GameSaturday's game was probably the best game of base ball ever played in Kansas. Cy Young, pitching for Boston against Philadelphia this summer, established a world's record by not allowing a Philadelphia man to reach first base. Saturday this record was almost equalied by Minneapolis as during the entire game but one Ellsworth man reached first base. McGill for Minneapolis gave a fine exhibition of pitching. He did not pitch a strike out game, but depended almost entirely upon his support, and a National League team couldn't have given him any better support than that handed out by the Minneapolis boys. Nye caught his usual good game. Easy pop-ups or hard hit grounders were all handled cleanly by Kay, Shaw, Short and Penquite in the infield, while Attridge, Sexton and Crabs took care of everything that was hit to the outfield. The only score of the game was made in the first inning, when with one out Short of Minneapolis reached first on a hit to third base, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Shaw's in-field hit. In the fifth inning Kay and Attridge reached first base on two safe hits, but were unable to score. In the eighth inning Short reached first on a safe hit and by excellent base running went to third on Shaw's well placed bunt, but the next man went out on a drive to center field and Short was left on third. With two outs in the fifth inning Mehl knocked a safe hit over second base, but the next man was an easy out and during the entire game not another Ellsworth man reached the first sack. It is an additional source of pride to Minneapolis people, that with two exceptions the team that played Saturday was composed of Ottawa county boys, while the Ellsworth team was made up of salaried ball palyers gathered from all parts of Kansas and Missouri.
Batteries -- Minneapolis, McGill and Nye. Ellsworth, Goodearl and Mehl.
