A Grandfather's Legacy

Grandpa's Baseball Legacy

Umpire Arrested - July 28, 1906

Charged with Using Improper Language in Galveston Game.

Special to the Chronicle

Galveston, Texas, July 28 (1906) -- Galveston took the first game today -- Score 4 to 1. It was won on the merits, infield hits and the "squeeze" bearing much upon the result.

Umpire Wright, in the first of the eighth, was arrested for improper language in reply to a question from the grand stand, and the game was forfeited to Austin by the usual score of 9 to 0. The language said to have been used was such as to offend even the blase old rounder, to say nothing of the many ladies in the audience. The action of the management in having Wright arrested, even at the expense of the forfeiture of the game, was commended by all present when the reason of it all became known.

The second game, in all probability, would have gone to Austin anyhow, the score at the beginning of the eighth, when the arrest was made, having been 2 to 0 in favor of the visitors. Haidt and Cavanaugh were responsible in their punkness for a large part of the two runs. The pitchers were not so bad. In fact, their work was even above the ordinary.

The official score of both games follows, the second being up to the time the game was forfeited 2 to 0.
