Swat Artists Slumped
Nearly all of the big bludgeon wielders of the South Texas league have taken a slump in their stick work. Bradley, the premier swat artist of the Senators, has dropped to 302, but at this figure he is practically leading the league. McGill and Watson are pitchers and Jehl has played but few games and is not playing regualrly. These four men are the only ones in the 300 class. However, the league as a whole is clouting much more effectively than they did last year. There were but two in the 300 class at this time last season and not more than a score in the 200 class. Now forty-nine are clouting the pellet at 200 or better. The pitchers in the league this year are not so good as those of last. When Nelson, Tevis, McCall or Harris are seving up the shoots you don't see any bloated figures in the basehit column. At the beginning of the season the younsters who were just breaking into select society performed with much eclat and the fans pronounced them wonders, but the club wielders are getting their lamps in trim and the youthful "phenoms" are exploding with a loud roar almost every day. "Daddy" LaRocque of the Hoodoos, follow Bradley with the sweet average of 292. Preston of Galveston, who has played but few games, has the same percentage. Jerry Kane of Beaumont follows with an averge of 288. john Massing, the boss swatter for Houston, has dwindled down to 273, and Joe Mowry, the next best hitter on the local outfit, has a percentage of 239. In the team batting averges Houston is at the foot of the class with a percentage of 206, Houston can make more runs on fewer hits than any team in the league; that is, they waste fewer hits and should be known as the hitless wonders. When a man reaches first the idea is to get the runner over the glad gum and all the arts of batting and baserunning is brought into play to accomplish this result. This is one of the reasons why Houston is at the top of the percentage column. Austin leads the league with the hickory and they have several swat artists of ability in their outfit. Joe Mowry has scored more runs than any man in the league. Joe has only the modest batting percentage of 239, but he has circled the ring forty times, and this is the main thing in baseball. Mowry's nearest rival as a run getter is Warren Gill, the Senator's mogul with thirty-five tallies to his credit. Mowry also leads in the base running department with sixteen pilfered cushions sewed up in his grip. Thebo of San Antonio and McMyrray of Beaumont are tied for second honors, with fifteen each. Clayton leads te sacrifice hitters, with twenty-three lovely taps. He leads the rest of the push by three country miles. Haidt of San Antonio is second, with ten to his credit. here is the story in figures: Team Batting Averages --
