A Grandfather's Legacy

Grandpa's Baseball Legacy

MORE Games of 1904 (Friends University). . .

It Was "Dead" Easy

Friends Trim K.U. Team to Tune of 13 to 2.

Friends University took K.U., into camp yesterday afternoon to the tune of 13 to 2 in a game in which the Lawrence team did not play ball at all. The strong batting of the Quakers was the feature of the game. Pyle was on the slab for K. U., when the game opened and in the third inning he retired in favor of Sexton after he had been "found" for seven his and nine runs in the second and third. Loomis had his batting clothes on and put the sphere over the left field fence twice in succession, and McCully did the same trick once.

Base hits were frequent and the slogan was "everybody get a hit."

Pyle's successor fared better and had only one bad inning, the seventh; when four runs were added to the Quakers' nine, when two men walked. McCully and Rich got hits, and the Lawrence men indulged in some headless playing. The visitors, according to their reputation, must have had an off day, else the other colleges of the state and other state universities must have "punk" teams.

The visitors stumbling block was McGill with whom they could not connect safely, only four hits being made off him. Ten of them struck out, and if any did connect at all, it was generally in safe territory. McGill is certainly a winner for the Quakers and was in fine shape yesterday.

The crowd yesterday was only a fair one, but was a little better than those of late. The ball the Quakers have been playing of late ought to be a drawing card for Wichita people.

Today the visitors are playing Fairmount on the latter's field, for the first time. Morgan is in the box for the K.U., men and Bates for Fairmount, and a battle royal is on.

Friends Win Easily.

Kansas University Will Try Fairmount Today.

Friends could and Kansas University couldn't hit the opposing pitcher's twisters tells the story of the latter's defeat at baseball by a score of 13 to 2 in the locals' favor yesterday afternoon on Hess athletic field.

Pyle, who started to do the twirling for K.U., was pounded out of the box in the third inning, when the locals stacked up nine runs to their credit and K. U. had none.

McGill pitched a faultless game for Friends and K.U. secured but three hits, while the locals took sixteen, all told. Sexton took the pitcher's box in the the fourth and held Friends down to four scores until the close of the last inning.

Friends not only hit the sphere for one, two and three base hits whenever the occasion demanded, but knocked three home runs during the game. A two base hit was the heaviest swat that any of K.U.'s players succeeded in making during the nine innings.

May 15, 1904 -- Friends Win From Strong Normal Club

Baseball Game Results in Score of 8 to 3.
Locals Batted Well
Emporia Loses Its Second Game of Season

The Friends' University baseball team scored its best and most complete victory of the season yesterday afternoon, when it met and defeated the strong team from the Sstate normal school of Emporia by a score of 8 to 3. It was but the second time this season that the Emporia team has suffered defeat.

The teachers from Emporia have met already this season and defeated such teams as Washburn College, of Topeka. Kansas University, Manhattan and Bethany College of Lindsborg. The Quakers are highly elated at their victory of yesterday, as they have, indeed, the right to be.

During the first part of the week Emporia defeated Friends on the former's grounds for the first time in three years. Yesterday's game evens matters and furnishes each player with a certain amount of confidence which will no doubt be a great stimulant in completing the remainder of the season with a long string of winnings.

The game yesterday was won, for one reason, by Emporia's inability to connect with McGill's curves. Another reason was on account of the heavy batting done by Friends. Two and three-base hits were numerous, and a home run fairly set the fans wild.

McGill struck out eight men during the nine innings, while Weiland, for the teachers, succeeded in making but four of the Quakers pound the atmosphere.

The heaviest stick work was done for Friends by McGill and Thompson. The latter got one single and a home run. He knocked the home run at a time when there were two men on bases and the hit resulted in three additional scores for Friends. McGill hit the sphere for two singles and a like number of doubles. Boone also did fine work for Friends by gathering in to long drives from the field.

The line-up was as follows:
Friends --
McGill, McCully, Hoyt, Rich, Davis, Jones, Thompson, Boone and Loomis.
Emporia -- Brookens, Weiland, Craig, O'Connor, McFarland, Bright, Shaffer, McFarland, Thompson

Dr. Outland umpired the game. There was a fair attendance.

Friends, 7; Bethany, 1.

The visiting team from Lindsborg found more than they could do to hold their own in the game with the home team on Wednesday last. The twisters of McGill were not to be unravelled and fourteen men laid down the stick in the one, two, three order. McCully, Friend's catcher, received a bad hit on the knee by the pticher's ball in the first inning, but managed to stay in the game.

Friend's batting was good, McGill, McCully and Thompson taking the lead. Bethany made two good double plays, but had many errors marked up against them.

Defeated Second time

Friends Also Succeed in Beating the "Terrible Swedes"

The "Terrible Swedes" of Bethany College, Lindsborg, went down to defeat yesterday afternoon for the second time since their arrival in the city, at the hands of Friends' University. McGill's ptiching, the Friends' heavy hitting and numerous errors proved the downfall of the blue and yellow boys.

Friends made the first score of the game in their initial turn at the bat. In the second inning they scored again, and once more in the fourth. The fireworks were touched off in the seventh and the Friends scored four times before Bethany got the required number of outs. The Swedes made their only score in the fourth inning.

McGill and McCully were Friends' all around men. In addition to striking out fourteen men. McGill got several hits. McCully got three hits out of four times at bat. He knocked the ball for two two-baggers and a one-base hit. Thompson also showed up well in the batting and is improving considerably ever his work of last season.

Bethany's star turns were two double plays. Errors were numerous on the part of the visitors and it seemed to be their off day.

In winning yesterday's game Friends' team is also in line for the state championship for the year 1904. The club has lost but four games during the entire season. Friends and Fairmount will cross bats during the latter part of the month. Cooper College of Sterling will arrive in the city Friday morning for a game each with Fairmount and Friends. Friday's game will be Cooper vs. Fairmount and the Saturday game Cooper vs. Friends.
