League Batsmen - June 17, 1906

McGill Is At the Top of the List
Bradley Real Leader

Massing Leads Local Team
Though He Has Slumped Some --
Edmondson and Gardner Gaining
Clayton Heads Bunters --
Mowry Stole Thirteen Bases

Bradley, the Austin infielder, is the leader of the South Texas league batsmen, although his fat average has moderated somewhat during the past week. his average is 317. Bradley in addition to having a large average is a timely hitter and is there with the much needed swat when the cushions are tenanted. McGill, the Austin pitcher, has a bigger percentage, but he has only played a half dozen games and his figures should be thrown out. Five men are batting 300 or better, a stronger showing than at any time last year. Meier and Jehl, who have played but few games, follow Bradley; then comes Jerry Kane of Beaumont with a percentage of 302. Ellis Hardy of Lake Charles is next with an average of 298.

John Massing, the premier swat artist of the Houston team, has slumped badly with the bludgeon and is now hitting at a 295 clip. Gardner, who led the league last year, is coming to the front rapidly. his percentage is 293 and he is fattening it at almost every game. Bob Edmondson is improving in his stick work. In two weeks he has gained 39 points.

Clayton, of course, leads the league in sacrifice hits, having 18 to his credit. The nearest men to him are Pendleton and Hutchcroft with eight bunts each. McMurray leads the league in base running, having pilfered fourteen sacks. Mowry and Thebo of San Antonio are hot on his trail, each having purloined thirteen bags.

Austin leads the league in team batting with a percentage of 234. Beaumont is second and Lake Charles third. These averages are compiled to include the games played Wednesday, June 13 (1906):
