A Grandfather's Legacy

Grandpa's Baseball Legacy - (June, 1906)

The Locals Plays Great Ball - June, 1906

Give A Wonderful Exhibition of the National Pastime --
Many Sensational Features -- Game Today at 4:30pm

The Hoodoos romped on the Legislators yesterday in a shameful fashion, sending the Husky Senators to the lime pit by a score of 6 to 0. The game while one sided was one of the most exciting ever played on the local pasture. The fast fielding of the locals, which at times bordered on the sensational brought forth many cheers.

Harris was in the rifle pit for the locals and shied out an article of the national pastime that made him the hero of the day. Gill who occupied the spot light position for the capitol city boys was less fortunate than his Hoodoo rival, being touched for nine robust swats for a total of seventeen cushions. His team mates were also to the limburger sandwiching in three rank miscues.

The Game

The first inning passed off without incident.

In the first half of the second Austin went out in one-two, three order. Weber opened the second spasm for Beaumont going to the Initial sack on a free pass. Fisher hit a hot one over the Keystone bag that was tagged for a two-cushion but Short speared the pill with one of his talons and Weber was caught at second; Fisher reaching first on the play. Bill Mellor picked out a reliable swat stick and almost the first ball over was sent down the third base line for three cushions. The hit was one of the longest of the season, but the game leg of Mellor's prevented him from getting a homer.

Hunter was all to the merry -- lining out a two bagger and scoring Mellor.

Hutter and Harris were easy outs.

In her half of the third chapter, Austin was benched in quick order. Beaumont again broke in the run column, scoring one tally on a single by LaRocque and a three base hit by Weber.

In the fourth verse, the Hoodoos made one more run on a three-cushion by Hutter and a single by McMurray.

In the fifth session the Legislators had the only chance of the contest to win. They had two men on bases with one out, but Harris struck the next two men out. Then he walked a man filling the bases. This did not help the visitors as the next man flew out to Hunter.

The last run of the melee was scored in the seventh act when McMurray's hit, his stolen base, a sacrifice hit and an error occurred.

Senators Lose In Ten Innings -
June 13, 1906

The Hoodoos Add Another Scalp
In A Contest With Score Four To Three

An Exciting Game of Ball

Fast and Sensational Fielding By Both Teams --
Locats Win Out With Their Willow Wands --
This Afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Beaumont team has played in some good games this year, but for excitement the game played yesterday was perhaps the King Pin of the season. The game lasted ten innings and at no time was the game the property of either team. Only through some fast fielding was the score held down on each side. The game was interesting in all respects, not only because Beaumont won by a score of 4 to 3, but also on account of the good hitting and the sensational fielding.

Weber started off to pitch for the Hoodoos and for six innings pitched magnificent ball, but in the seventh the Senators found him for four singles and he hit one batter. Only through the fastest of fielding were the Legislators held to two runs in this verse.

While Weber was knocked out of the box, he was all to the cookies when a pinch hit was needed, landing out a three-bagger in the last of the seventh, sending Mellor over the plate with the run that tied the score.

Bunton replaced Weber in the eighth and, besides pitching a good game, got a hit in the tenth inning and scored the winning run.

McCall was on the slab for the visitors and pitched a fairly good game of ball. His support was errorless and the loss of the game lies directly at his feet.

The Senators put up a fine exhibition of the national game, executing some wonderful fielding stunts and weilding the willow with much eclat. The main trouble with the vistors appears to be their slowness on bases. But then it must be considered that McMurray was their opposing catcher.

Dac LaRoque, Paulig and Kane for the locals each did fine in the field, and they were also to the mustard with their swat sticks.

For the Senators, Gardner at second was the chief attraction.

LaRoque, Paulig and Kane for the locals were in the limelight at various times, and Mellor at first was also to the cookies, saving the infielders several errors through his fast fielding on the initial cushion.

For the visitors, Gardner was the chief attraction, making a number of wonderful stops of hot ground balls.

Beaumont started the run getting in the very first inning.

After McMurray had struck out, Kane hit safe and was advanced to third on LaRoque's long single. He scored on Paulig's fly-out to Hutchcroft.

In the third verse, the Senators sent a man across the platter on two punk errors.

The locals scored their second tally in the fourth chapter on two clean singles.

In the seventh the game looked as if it might go to Austin but by fast fielding on the part of the entire Beaumont team and a cool head on the part of Weber, the Senators were held to only two runs on four singles and a batter hit by pitched ball.

In the last part of the seventh the ocals tied the score.

Mellor first up got to first on four wide one's. Hunter sacrificed. Hutter went out from Gardner to first and Mellor was on third. Weber did the required by lacing the leather to deep center for three cushions. McMurray ended the round by going out from pitcher to first.

In the tenth, Bunton, who had replaced Weber, hit safe and was sacrificed to second. he went to third on Kane's out, LaRocque was hit by McCall. Paulig stepped into the batter's box and the fans felt confident, for Dutch is one of the best pinch hitters in the minor league ball. Almost the first ball over, the third sacker sent far over the center fielder's head and the game was won.
