There have been good ball games and there have been bad ball games at Sportsman's Park, but the exhibition pulled off there yesterday afternoon was unquestionably the poorest ever played upon that diamond. Poor pitching, poor fielding, poor base running and all round dumb playing characterized the work of the squad of ball players who, as one of the town wits said, has "misrepresented" Galveston all this season on the ball fields of South Texas. To add to the extreme unsatisfactoriness of the game Umpire Quigg got in two very bad decisions at plays on the bases, one at second and one one at first. Altogether, there has been nothing like it, and it is to be hoped by an already over-indulgent crowd of fans that nothing like it will be seen here this year, or in years to come. The score was 12 to 2 in seven innings. Umpire Quigg very mercifully calling the game on account of darkness and the evident desires of the spectators.

Slater was on the slab, once more to try to pitch. It was the veriest sham. He had pracitcally no control of the ball, and merely lobbed them over as easy targets for the slapsticks of the Senators. In the seven innings he succeeded in walking seven men, and allowed a total of thirteen hits, one for three bases that scored two runs.

The playing of the other memebers of the team was almost equally as bad. Tony Smith at short, usually very fast, played a most indifferent fielding game, a game that it is apparently hard to find an excuse for. Other players of the team threw the ball wildly and promiscuously about the lot until the game became little better than a howling farce.

June 5th - Senators Won Second

With two men out Gill Lands A Two-Bagger
Which Scores Two Runs --
Missed Foul Won Game for Home Team.

Austin Hitting Hard

McGill Did Good Pitching & Made Three Hits
Out of Three Times at Bat --
Fine Field Work for the Senators.

The Senators won from Beaumont at the Driving park yesterday afternoon by the score of 5 to 2. The Senators had their day and outplayed the Oilers all through the game. By bunching two hits, followed by a sacrifice and a long fly to right field, Austin made the first run, and this, followed by an error on the part of Kane at shortstop, who fumbled the ball, allowing the runner to make first, the second run was scored by the runner coming in from third. This occurred in the third inning. In the fourth inning Beaumont made one run on a hit, followed by a walk and then another hit. The Oilers repeated the stunt in the fifth, making one run by an error on the part of Hartman in allowing a man to reach first, which was followed by a two-bagger, bringing in the second run, which tied the score. In the seventh Austin made three runs after two men were out, which won the game.

In the first inning Beaumont got a man to first base on balls, followed by a sacrifice and a man going out at first. Austin went out one, two, three in the first and got one hit in the second. Beaumont fared little better in the second and third.

In the third inning Gordon led off with a good hit and was sent to second on a hit by McGill. Both were advanced a base on a sacrifice by Short. Hutchcroft drove a long fly to right field, which was caught, and Gordon came home for the first run of the game for Austin. Gardner drove a hot liner to Kane at shortstop, who fumbled it, allowing Gardner to reach first and McGill to come home. Two men were out when Gill fouled out to Mellor.

In the fourth Beaumont made one run and got two hits. The Oilers seemed to have taken a hitting fever in this inning and some excellent fielding saved more than one run. Kane, the first man up, drove a long one in the direction of Hutchcroft, who made a very spectacular catch and put the batter out. A poor fielder would have missed the ball, and it was caught in the nick of time as it was. LaRocque then drove one to Jeffries, who made another spectacular catch. Still the Oilers drove the ball. Paulig got a hit and was advanced to second on a balk. Fisher was hit by the pitcher, putting two men on bases. Mellor got a beautiful hit and brought in Paulig for the first run of the game for Beaumont. Hunter went out at first and the runs were held down to one.

In its half of the fourth Austin went out in a hurry. In the fifth inning the visitors added another run, which tied the score. Harris went out at first and Hays drove one to Hartman, who let it go by, allowing Hays to reach first. McMurry flew out to Bradley, Kane then drove a two-bagger, which scored Hays, but Kane, in attempting to stretch it into a three-bagger, was thrown out at third.

In the sixth and seventh Beaumont could not reach first base. The seventh was the winning inning for the Senators. McGill led off with a hit. Short flew out to left field. Hutchcroft got a hit, putting two men on bases. Gardner made a sacrifice, which advanced the runners to second and third. Gill came to bat with a man on third and a man on second and two men out. With two strikes on him, Gill put a high foul in the air and Mellor missed the ball when it came right into his hands. If this foul had been caught, three runs would have been cut off. Instead the next ball that passed over the home plate Gill knocked for a two-bagger, which brought in both McGill and Hutchcroft. Bradley followed with a hit, which scored Gill for the last run of the game.

Austin got one hit in the eighth and Beaumont went out one, two, three. Beaumont made one hit in the ninth, but the runner was left at first, and the score stood 5 to 2 in favor of the Senators.

McGill pitched a good game for the Senators and also did some excellent batting, making three hits out of three times at bat, and got two runs. He got his base every time he stepped to the home plate.

The two teams are pretty well matched. Beaumont does excellent team work but it has not the stars like Gill, Gordon, Bradley, Hutchcroft, Gardner, Short and others on the Senators' team. In fact it would be a difficult thing to find another bunch of stars like that in the line up of the Senators.
