Nothing Was Done

Ten time without success the Senators and Sandcrabs tried to loop the loop.

Outfielders Busy

Pitchers On Their Mettle

Both of them exhibited a fine article. Assists were shy -- Smith's catch was a great one.

Where They Play Today:

The moon shines bright these nights. If it hadn't been that Austin has to catch a train for San Antonio, they might have been playing yet. As it was, yesterday's contest was called at the end of the tenth inning after one hour and fourteen minutes' play with "nary" a tally scored.

It was great doings. Both pitchers were on their metal, and, like those of the day before, didn't try to grab the whole cheese themselves. They were both willing to let the fielders have a chance for a little glory, since the Fourth of July is so near at hand. The fielders were grateful and manifested that gratitude by as beautiful a bunch of clean and snappy work as has been seen on the Galveston diamond since Noah wore knee breeches.

Not that the game was errorless -- for it wasn't, there being two miscues by the visitors -- but there was greater quantity and greater quality of fast work than falls to the lot of the usual half dozen games.

On Sunday Galveston made two errors while Austin did a gilt-edged job. Yesterday the tables were turned, with Austin being charged with two bobbles, and Galveston having the credit of a clean record.

One very noticeable thing about the exhibition was that there was an exceedingly large number of unassisted put-outs, there having been a total of only nineteen assists in a ten-inning game which held but four strike-outs. The players all were in the game and each one of them was on his ten toes, or as many thereof as he possessed.

A strange thing about those put-outs on flies was that a great number of them were of the most difficlult kind and some of them not even a little bit short of phenomenal. For instance, Tony Smith wouldn't gamble a copper cent's worth that he could duplicate that cherry-pickin the fifth. Tony ran as hard as he could and when he saw the ball was about to drop to the ground before he could get to it he reached out his bare hand in a dying struggle and that hand had glue on it. It was a beauty.

Every man on both teams with the exception of Cavanaugh and McGill figured in the put-outs, and nearly every one of them handled some hot ones. Of the total of sixty put-outs twenty of them went to the outfield and there were some warm liners and pop-up flies that were handled by the shortstops and the basemen. The remarkably few assists recorded is the best comment upon that feature of the game. For Austin there were only seven while the Crabs got a total of twelve.

The record shows that McGill had just a tiny little bit the better of Whittenborg on the pitching propostition, but it was so slight it amounted to nothing, especially in view of the fact that both twirlers held the batsmen down when hits were needed.

The only runner whose wind didn't give out before he got to the third cushion was Gill and it happened in the second inning. He hit to right and was advanced to second by a sacrifice and to third by a passed ball. While he occupied the third sack, with two down, it looked like a safe hit that Jeffries poked out into Longley's territory. Longley saved the game by a lively sprint and good catch. That was the only time either team was in imminent danger of scoring.
