Long legged Pitcher McGill Puzzles The Hard Hitting Creoles
But the speed and control of the lengthy one let them down with four hits. Which net one run to five by the Senators on eleven hits.

Yesterday Games:Beaumont 5; Houston 1 |
Where They Play Today:Beaumont at Houston |
Failure on the part of the home team effectively to connect with the puzzling delivery of McGill, the elongated twirler of the Austin team, who was in rare form, despite his tiresome railroad trip, was responsible for the defeat of the Creoles in yesterday's game. A spectacular one-handed pull-down of a long fly against the left field fence by little Carter, the Austin midget, was the feature of the game. The fielding of the visitors was faultless, and with the exception of a couple of costly errors by Ollre and Cooper the locals put up a good game, although the work on both sides was somewhat listless. Switzer made a fine catch of a long drive to right and the work of Miers behind the bat was good, but his curves were not working as well as usual.
In the first inning little Carter who besides being a good infielder and an outfielder of the sensational order is a good sticker, went down on three strikes, but Hutchcroft followed with a clean single and Gardner hit to Ollre who didn't get it to Hardy in time and Hutchcroft reached third and shortly afterward scored on a wild throw, Gardner following him across the plate. The Creoles went down to one-two-three order.
In the second neither side scored, the locals again going down in succession.
In the third Gill drove a liner over second base but was thrown out by Miers in trying to steal. Hartman went out on three strikes and Bradley drove one to right which should have been good for a two-bagger, but bad fielding let the runner in on the hit. In their half, after Miers had lined out a two-bagger the Creoles were retired in quick succession.
The visitors nearly escaped scoring Carter in the fourth and the locals made their one tally on a pass to Ollre and a two-bagger by Vinson.
In the fifth the visitors sent only three men to the plate. Hubbard made a clean hit and stole second, but Cooper fanned, Blackburn went down on a sacrifice and Switzer was thrown out.
In the sixth three men on each team faced the pitcher.
In the seventh McGill and Carter scored on a hit by McGill, a pass to Carter on account of being hit by the pitcher, a sacrifice by Hutchinson and an error by Ollre. In this inning Cooper was robbed of a three-bagger by little Carter, who picked a liner off the left field fence with his left hand.
There was nothing doing for either side in the eighth or ninth.

Umpire -- Spielberger
Ladies day today. Starr will be in the box for the locals. Miers made two of our four hits and one of them was a two-bagger. That Vinson boy got his regular little bingle, and so did Ollre.
Our fans quit rooting too early. They help the team to beat the band when the score is about 4 to 1 in our favor, but they quit rooting as soon as the other fellows take the lead.
The Senators had their batting eye yesterday, but Blackburn didn't pitch a bad game at that. Spielberger's work with the indicator was fair. It will be all right if we take other two from Austin.
McGill made a great show of preparing to send up a spit ball and Miers soaked it for two bases. After that the spit ball was cut out. One of McGill's favorite stunts is to stagger backward as he delivers the ball. It looks like the beginning of a wild pitch but is generally a strike.
"Call me Buttsy; dat's right, don't stand no ceremony -- Jest call me Buttsy," urged Mr. Clemens, the new "empire," who reported today to relieve Spielberger. "I have went an' bought ten dollars worth o' clo'es an' hain't empired but one game," complained Mr. Clemens. He is a native of Cincinnati, and looks as if he could make good. He's on the Tim Hurst order and knows the game
