A Grandfather's LegacyGrandpa's Baseball Legacy![]() [This is a photo of Grandpa Will "Bill" McGill's baseball team. NOT sure when it was taken or which team it was! If anyone knows..... Please let me know! Thanks! Grandpa is standing in back row, third from the right. If anyone recognizes any of these players, please contact Linda at Paristimes.] In the beginning. . . My Grandpa Will's Baseball Scrapbook was made using a Congoleum Gold Seal Rugs Visualizer display book that was used in the furniture business he and his brother James had in Alva, Oklahoma in the early 1900s. The newspaper clippings were pasted over the rug display pages. It starts around 1904 when my Grandpa Will (Bill) McGill was a pitcher for the Friends University (Kansas) baseball team around 1904.
Games of 1904. . .Too Many Errors, Kansas University Defeats Friends by 3 to 0 -- These rank errors caused the defeat of the Friends University baseball team at Lawrence yesterday afternoon in a game with the Kansas University club. The game resulted in a score of 3 to 0 in favor of K.U. Friends netted four hits during the nine innings, while the state university hit Friends for only two. McGill's pitching was the feature of the game. The first run made by K.U. was scored as the result of a a passed ball at the home plate. The second was due to a hot drive which passed through Friends third baseman. The third was a allowed K. U. due to Friends' right fielder dropping a long fly to that neck of the woods. The fielder got under the sphere all right, but it wouldn't stick to his hands.. This afternoon, Friends will play the State Normal school at Emporia. K. U. 3, Friends -- 0Quakers Lost the Game Through Costly Errors. The University of Kansas shut out the Friends University of Wichita yesterday afternoon, by the score of 3 to 0. The game was the prettiest one seen on McCook field this year, and was a pitcher's battle from start to finish. The Varsity scored its first run, on an error, the last half of the fourth inning. With two men out, Royer on third, and Sexton at the bat, McCully made a miserable fumble of the third strike, failing to throw Sexton out at first, and allowing Royer to score. In the seventh with two outs, and two men on bases, it looked as though the visitors might tie the score. Pyle struck his man out, retiring the side. Two more runs came in the eighth, Pyle went to first on balls. Henri placed a safe one in right field. Pyle was thrown out at second. Henri demonstrated his ability as a base stealer and took second. Brown lined out a hot one for two bags, which passed the third baseman. Henri scored on a bad throw from left. Gillet found a man under his fly to right field, and Brown was caught off his base. The victory came as a surprise to many, as the Wichita boys who have been coached by Dr. Outland, were touted as being a set of sluggers. Pyle pitched a heady game and found the Quakers easy. All he did was to crowd them with balls which they tried to hit and to fan them out at critical moments. McGill pitched a fine game for Friends. The attendance was small but enthusiastic. Batteries -- K.U., Pyle and Royer; Friends, McGill and McCully.
