Letters From Brother (Gene) to Brother (Bob "Bud")

7 Mar. 1939, Alva, Okla. --

Dear Bud,

Well - I got your letter and a 11 inch snow storm the same day. We've been having a pretty mild winter but a few real cold days and then some warm ones.

About the dough for your Initiation - Bud, its been so damn long since I've even seen $10.00 I don't know what one looks like. I haven't even gotten to the City since a month and a half before Christmas. I bought 62 head of cattle from Dr. Hole's estate. (With out any help from mom) and then I traded 5 pigs for 60 acres of sowed feed and 100 acres of grass until May 1. And have been running them up there. I've been offered 600.00 profit for my deal but can't afford to sell them. That makes me 77 head counting my registered cows and bulls - I now have 14 registered females and 2 registered males. But on the cash side of the fence, I don't have any money and neither does mom - She's just finished selling her wheat to pay taxes $500.00 and send you your last check.

The wheat down south doesn't look like its going to come up enough for even a half stand and we may be in a hell of a shape if it doesn't.

Maybe something will turn up here but if it don't I'd suggest that you try and pick up a little cash in your spare time and save a little of the money mom sends you and then maybe they'll initiate you and you can finish paying with your camp check this summer.

Mom hasn't gotten your grades and thought maybe you hadn't given the school this address. Better do that. Sorry about the sound of this letter, Bud, but its the truth.

Gene

P. S. James Acel is pretty darn sick.
