NW Oklahoma Marriages
(1930s thru 1939)

This 200+ page scrapbook of NW Oklahoma marriages from the early 1930's thru 1945 was kept by a lady named, Dolly Carlson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carlson. She is deceased now.

Most of the marriage write-ups only had the year penciled above each of them. Some had no date. I am assuming that most of them were taken from the local Alva papers, but there are some from Wichita papers and Springfield, Colorado.

DeGeer- Dunning - Alva Girl Is Married Saturday... Mrs. Ivy Alexander, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. R. I. DeGeer, and Howard Dunning united in marriage at 6 o'clock Saturday morning, at home of bride's parents, 613 1/2 Barnes (Alva).

Shafer-Smith Wedding... Miss Shafer Becomes Bride of J. B. Smith - Lillian Shafer, Alva, becomes bride of J. B. Smith, Alva.

Wookey-Humphrey - ca. 1932... Marriage Sunday - Miss Mildred Wookey daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wookey, of Alva and Charles Franklin Humphrey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Humphrey of Kiowa, Kansas, was solemnized at twelve o'clock noon on Sunday at the home of Rev. Charles Murray, 908 Second Street.

Rolfe-Burns - December 27, 1932... An affair of social interest to the younger set was given Saturday night at the home of Mrs. Art Rolfe, northeast of the city, announcing the marriage of her daughter, Melba, to Mr. Homer L. Burns, of Enid. The marriage took place at Newton, Kansas, on December 27, 1932.

Wheelock-Brand - ca. 1932... Miss Ruth Wheelock and Max Brand marriage solemnized Thursday evening at Roswell, New Mexico, with Rev. LeRoy Thompson, former pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city, reading the marriage vows. They will be attended by Mr. and Mrs. Rolf McPherson of Los Angeles, Calif. They expect to return to Alva Sunday, and will make their home at 810 Church street. Miss Wheelock is the daughter of Mrs. Carrie Wheelock of this city. Mr. Brands is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Brand, 623 Church street.

Rolfe-Burns - 1932... Mr. Homer L. Burns, of Enid married Melba Rolfe Saturday, 27 December 1932 at the home of Mrs. Art Rolfe, northeast of the city. The marriage took place at Newton, Kans., on December 27, 1932. Melba is the daughter of Mrs. Art Rolfe.

Shafer-Haney Wedding - ca. 1933... Miss Shafer Weds Byron Haney - Ferguson, Missouri marked the marriage of Joyce Shafer of Ferguson, Mo., daughter of Mrs. Anton Shafer of Alva, to Byron E. Haney, also of Ferguson, Missouri, at 3:00P.M., May 31.

Wesner-Wiegand - February 25, 1933... Approaching Marriage Is Announced - Miss Helen Wesner marriage to Carl Wiegand will be an event of February 25, 1933.

Taylor-Haines - ca. 1933... Miss Claudine Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Taylor of Sharon, Okla., was united in marriage to Ward Hankins Haines of Alva, Okla., son of Mr. and Mrs. Birch O. Haines, 1014 Choctaw Street, Monday evening at 8:30 o'clock with Rev. J. L. Burket officiating.

Tanner-Manning - ca. 1933... Announcement Made of Marriage - Couple Married Here Late Wednesday - Miss Georgia Tanner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Tanner, became the bride of James Manning, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Manning of near Avard.

Shirley-Baker - Nov. 24, ca. 1933... Frieda Shirley Becomes Bride of Charles Baker - Shirley-Baker - Nov. 24, ca. 1933 - Mr. and Mrs. Orville Shirley, west of the city, announce the marriage of their daughter, Frieda, to Mr. Charles Baker, Woodward.

Schaefer-Ewbank Marriage - ca. 1933... Miss Mildred Schaefer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schaefer, southeast of the city, marries Mr. George Ewbank, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ewbank, northwest of the city, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Lutheran manse, in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. William Wagner. Rev. Otto Hoyer read the marriage vows.

Ross-Highfill - July 18, 1933... Announcement Made of Marriage - Miss Ann Ross,daughter of Mrs. Lizzie Ross, to Cleat Highfill, Cherokee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Highfill of Jet. The vows were exchanged Wednesday, July 18, at the home of bride's mother with Rev. Childers of Capron, officiating.

Read-Collins - ca. 1933... Nuptials Solemnized - A very beautiful wedding took place at the Friends church Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, when Miss Bertha Read, Alva, and Thomas L. Collins, Gray, Oklahoma, were united in marriage.

Rauh-Schuessler - ca. 1933... Couple Married Sunday at Bride's Home - Miss Edna Rauh and Walter Schuessler were united in marriage Sunday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Rauh, southeast of Alva.

Rackley-Stewart - ca. 1933... Miss Myrtle Rackley, daughter of Mrs. Daisy Rackley, 720 Fifth Street, Weds Clifford E. Stewart, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma, Saturday morning at the Methodist Episcopal church.

Rackley-Paul - ca. 1933... Grace Rackley Becomes Bride of Marlow Paul Rackley-Paul - Miss Grace Rackley to Mr. Marlow Paul, son of Mrs. John Paul of this city, was solemnized Thursday night at 7 o'clock in the manse of the Presbyterian church, by Rev. M. S. Epperson.

McCormick-Wieskotten - July 14, 1933... Vows Are Read - Miss Katherine Wieskotten and Roy S. McCormick, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McCormick of Alva, Okla., Rev. Francis Eric Bloy officiated at St. James by the Sea, San Diego, Calif.

Lancaster-Blue - ca. 1933... Informal Bridge To Honor Bride-Elect - Miss Virginia Lancaster of Cherokee, whose marriage to Mr. Vennie Blue of Kansas City, formerly of the city, will be an event of the near future.

Howard-Rudy - May 1, 1933... Nuptials May 1- (printed May 3, 1933, local newspaper) - A beautiful and impressive wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carey M. Howard of 331 N. E. 38 Street, Oklahoma City on May 1 when their daughter, Montana Crystal was united in marriage to J. W. Rudy also of Oklahoma City, son of Mr. Phillip Rudy of Alva.. The Rev. DeSelms of Oklahoma City read the double ring ceremony.

Gallon-Dennis - July 21, 1933... Vows Read - Miss Marie Gallon and Wesley Dennis, marriage was solemnized at 7 o'clock, Thursday evening at the St. Stevens church. The Rev. R. M. Casady read the services. Mrs. Dennis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Gallon, 930 Maple Street. Mr. Dennis is the son of MR. And Mrs. George Dennis of Purcell.

Fowitz-Elliot - ca. 1933... Dinner Is Given For Couple - Miss Dorothy Fowitz and Roscoe Elliot, whose wedding was solemnized Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ryerson gave a formal dinner Monday evening at their home, 926 Locust street. Miss Dorothy Kathryn Fowitz to Roscoe Elliot took place at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church.

Collins-Dennis - July 18, 1933... Miss Velma Collins and Mr. Denny Dennis on July 18 at Wichita, Kans. The marriage service was read in the study of Dr. Dawes, pastor of the Methodist church there. The bride is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. W. S. Collins, 929 College Avenue. Mr. Dennis is the son of Mr. And Mrs. T. L. Dennis of Waynoka.

Rauh-Schuhmacher - April 1, 1934... Marriage Vows Read for Prominent Alva Couple - Miss Zipporah Rauh, daughter of Mr. Alvin Rauh, southeast of Alva, and Mr. Franklin Schuhmacher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schuhmacher, of this city. The marriage was solemnized at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 1, in the home of the bride, before a large group of relatives and friends of the two families. The Reverend Otto Hoyer, pastor of the Lutheran church, read the impressive ring ceremony.

Geeslin-Hesser -- May 24, ca. 1935-36 - Northwestern Graduate Is May Bride - In the presence of thirty friends and relatives Miss La Verne Geeslin became the bride of Mr. Peter Hesser at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Geeslin, of Stillwater, who celebrated their silver wedding anniversary that day. The vows were read by the Rev. Isaac Hesser of the Christian church in Hydro (Oklahoma). Rev. Hesser is the father of the groom.

George-Certain - March 3, 1935 -- George-Certain Wedding Announced - A marriage of interest to their friends is that of Miss Pauline George of Jet, Oklahoma, to Lynn Certain, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Certain of Alva. The wedding was solemnized at Buffalo, Oklahoma on March 3, 1935, with the Reverend Boyles officiating. Attending the couple were Miss Marguerite Swingle of Cherokee and Mr. Glen Marcum of Alva.

Knight-Long - December 23, 1935... December Marriage Announced Recently - Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Lucille Knight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Knight, Waynoka, and Mr. Eldon Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Long, Alva. The wedding was solemnized on Monday, December 23, 1935, at 5:30 p.m. in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.

Simon-Huff - August 11, 1934... Vows Are Read -- A picturesque and an appropriate setting was the lovely garden of Dr. and Mrs. J. V. L. Morris for the wedding Saturday evening of Miss Jennie Simon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Simon, 1013 Center Street, and Mr. Lewis M. Huff, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Huff of Capron.

Wesley-Clark - ca. 1935... Mrs. George Clark Honored at Garden Party - A lovely garden bridal shower, for Mrs. George Clark, nee Miss Minnie Wesley, was held at the home of Mrs. Charles Woods Thursday evening.

Stople-Lockhart - ca. 1935... Anna Stople - Roland Lockhart Wed. Orange, Calif., Aug 6 - Choosing the lovely gardens surrounding the home of her uncle, J. D. Zinke, in Glendale as the setting, Miss Anna Stople, 405 South Main street, daughter of Mrs. E. Stople, of Glendale, was married to Roland Lockhart, of Santa Ana, Friday evening at 8 o'clock in the presence of a group of close friends and relatives.

Carlson-Morrison - June 7, ca. 1935... Carlson-Morrison Wedding Announced - A recent wedding of interest was that of Mr. Edward Carlson, of northwest of Alva and Miss Lola Morrison, Seiling, Oklahoma, which took place in Taloga, Oklahoma, Sunday, June 7th.

Hyde-Dunn - June 29, ca. 1935...
Miss Alice Hyde Married Today - Oklahoma City, June 29 - Miss Alice Hyde, formerly employed by the state election board, was to be married today to Ralph Dunn of Rochester, N.Y., at Buffalo, N.Y.

Staake-McColley - ca. 1935... Staake-McColley Vows Exchanged - Miss Pauline Staake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Staake, 926 Locust, became the bride of Howard McColley, Alva, formerly of Rosston, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Christian church parsonage.

Schwennesen-Hardin - ca. 1935... Pre-Nuptial Shower Honors Miss Schwennesen - As a pre-nuptial courtesy to her sister, Miss Beulah Schwennesen, whose marriage to Lloyd Hardin, Enid, will take place next week, Mrs. Howard Shafer, 918 Seventh street, entertained at a linen shower Saturday evening.

Thompson-Robertson - June 3 ca. 1935... Former Alva Girl Is June Bride - Very impressive and simple was the informal wedding of Miss Miriam Lee Thompson, only child of Rev. and Mrs. LeRoy Thompson of Roswell, New Mexico, to Mr. Joseph Franklin Robertson, also of Roswell, which took place at four o'clock Wednesday afternoon, June 3, at the First Presbyterian church in Columbia, Missouri, before an assemblage of fifty guests.

Burket-Schnoebelen - ca. 1935... Former Alva Girl Weds Mooreland Man - Miss Ailene Burket, daughter of Mr. J. M. Burket, Alva, became the bride of Mr. Hugh Schnoebelen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Omer Schnoebelen, Mooreland, at a pretty church ceremony Saturday morning, June 27, at 9 o'clock.

Norton-Shoemaker - ca. 1935... Recent Bride - From Wichita Beacon - Mrs. Everett W. Shoemaker was Miss Helen Norton prior to her marriage Saturday, June 15, evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bell, as is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Norton. Mr. Shoemaker is employed by the Mell-O-Maid Dairy Company. The couple willreside at 117 South Kansas.

Hollis-Smith Showers... Miss Ealon Hollis, Sunday became the bride of John Smith. Mrs. W. E. Steadman, Mrs. J. L. Burchett and Mrs. C. C. Stewart entertained Tuesday evening in the home of Mrs. Steadman, 819 5th St.

Payne-Ray - Feb. 9, 1935... Marriage Is Announced - Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Payne announced today the marriage of their daughter, Wanda to Mr. Harden Ray. The wedding took place at the First Baptist church in Enid, February 9, with Rev. Haskins, pastor officiating.

Anderson-Faulkner - March 24, 1935... Woods County Couple Married Saturday - Miss Irene Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Anderson of Alva, marries Calvin Faulkner, son of Mrs. Mattie Faulkner of Alva, Saturday evening, March 24, at 1024 Normal Street, with Rev. Maggie Hull officiating.

Parker-Southern 1935... Louis O. Southern and Miss Parker Marry - Miss Elizabeth S. Parker became the bride of Louis O. Southern, a pharmacist and is employed in the Monfort Drug store. The vows were exchanged at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Parker, 1204 Fourth Street, Friday evening. Rev. M. S. Epperson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiated.

Humphrey-Smith - June 9, 1935... Northwestern Graduate is Wed in Church Ceremony - Miss Irene Humphrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Humphrey of Arnold, Kansas, became the bride of Ray Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith of Arnold, Sunday, June 9, in an impressive ceremony at the First Methodist Church of Arnold.

McClain-Lee - August 14, 1936 -- McClain-Lee Nuptials Performed in Enid - Mr. and Mrs. Fennis Lee, Kingfisher, announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Bernice Lee, to Chester E. McClain, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McClain, 818 Choctaw, of this city. The wedding was quietly solemnized on August 14 in the study of the Rev. Oscar Evanson, pastor of the First Methodist church at Enid with Mr. Evanson officiating.

Fisher-Bartz - 1936 -- Miss Fisher Becomes Bride of Mr. Bartz In Quiet Nuptials Sunday - In a quiet nuptial service at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Miss Pauline Fisher, daughter of Mrs. Jessie Fisher, 818 Maple Street, became the bride of C. DeWitt Bartz of Hardtner, Kansas. The ceremony took place in the Evangelical church at Hardtner with the Rev. Werner, pastor, officiating. The bride's mother, Mrs. Fisher, and the bridegroom's father, Frank Bartz, were the couple's only attendants.

Frye-Schuhmacher - October 24, 1936... Parties Accompany Wedding Announcement -- Of major prominence in society circles here and at Enid is the announcement by Mrs. E. McCray Frye, Enid, of the marriage of her daughter, Miss Gwendolyn Frye, to Howard Schuhmacher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Schuhmacher of this city. The wedding was an event of October 24, 1936. It occurred at Medicine Lodge, Kans., with the Rev. F. H. Hayward, Presbyterian minister, reading the nuptial service.

Haworth-Huneke - ca. 1936 -- To Wed - Miss Pauline Haworth, will exchange vows with Harold Huneke this Friday in the Friends Church here. Miss Haworth is the daughter fo Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Haworth, and Mr. Huneke's parents are Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Huneke, all of Alva. Mr. Huneke is chairman of the mathematics department at Northwestern State college.

Nevitt-Day - October 24, ca. 1936 - Nuptials Announced -- Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Nevitt of Oxford, Kansas, announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen Dale, to Joe R. Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Day of Alva, Oklahoma, Saturday evening, October 24, at Medicine Lodge, Kansas.

Etherton-Hughes July 12, 1936... Vows Exchanged -- Wedding vows were read for Miss Ara Etherton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Etherton of Buffalo, and C. Paul Hughes of Freedom Sunday afternoon at four o'clock in the home of the bride's parents.

Bengtson-Yates - December 25, 1936... Former Northwestern Student Weds At Yuletide Ceremony -- Of interest to friends here particularly in college circles, is announcement of the marriage on Christmas day of Miss Mary Bengtson, fdaughter of MR. and Mrs. O. B. Bengston of Hillsdale, to Mr. Clark Yates of Vinita, Oklahoma.

Omey-Moore - August 11, 1936... Miss Marguerite Omey Weds Hugo Man -- A wedding of more than usual interest was that of Miss Marguerite G. Omey, Freedom, to Mr. Earle K. Moore, of Hugo, which was solemnized in Hugo Sunday morning at six o'clock at Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church with Rev. Quintin Ferguson officiating.

Provost-Brining - ca. 1936... Several Alvans Participate In Norman Wedding -- Mrs. O. G. Hampton, Miss Zelma Fisher and Mrs. C. C. Provost participated in a wedding of state interest last Sunday at Norman when Miss Nina Provost, sister of Miss Dora Provost and Mrs. C. C. Provost, both of Alva, became the bride of Raymond Brining, Cherokee.

Nelson-Bennett - 1936... Gladys Nelson Becomes Bride of Floyd Bennett -- Nuptial vows were read for Miss Gladys Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nelson, and Mr. Floyd Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Bennett, Lamont, at a pretty home wedding Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The wedding was solemnized at the Nelson home, 904 Church Street.

Randall-Smith - ca. 1936... Miss Randall Becomes Bride of James L. Smith -- At a simple, but impressive, ceremony, Miss Mary Randall, daughter of Mrs. Jennie Randall, 227 East Flynn, became the bride of James L. Smith, Canton, at 11 o'clock this morning at the Christian parsonage.

Murray-Farrar - 1936... Nuptials Read -- A quiet and pretty wedding was solemnized at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of Mrs. Lily M. Murray, near Richmond, when her younger daughter, Miss Mary Christas, become the bride of Mr. Ray Farrar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Farrar of Alva,. in the presence of their immediate families. Rev. Charles Davis of the Church of Christ of Richmond officiated, using the ring ceremony.

Yohn-Cameron - Monday, Sept. 28, 1936... Vows Are Read For Popular Young Couple - The marriage of Miss Louise Yohn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Yohn, northwest of the city, and Robert Cameron, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Welch Cameron, west of Alva, was solemnized Monday, September 28, at the home of the Rev. R. G. Vaughan, pastor of the Christian Church.

Sears-Conway (Conaway) - August, 1936... Miss Vivian Sears Weds Carson Conaway At Pretty Home Ceremony - An impressive event of Sunday evening at 6 o'clock was the marriage of Miss Vivian Sears to Mr. Carson Conaway of Deer Creek, at the home of the bride's parents. Miss Sears is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Sears of 709 Noble Street, and Mr. Conaway is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Conaway of Deer Creek.

Chase-Thompson - July 5, 1936... Marriage Announced - Miss Phyllis Chase of this city and Mr. Russell Thompson of Canton, Okla., which took place July 5 at Okmulgee. The bride is the daughter of Judge R. M. Chase. Mr. Thompson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Thompson of Canton and is associated with the Woolworth stores in Tulsa.

Bergen-Schultz - ca. 1936... Miss Anna Bergen, daughter of Mrs. Bernice Bergen, marriage to Mr. Eddie Schultz will be an event of the near future. Mrs. Bernice Bergen entertained a group of friends at her home, 104 Barnes Avenue, Tuesday evening at a pre-nuptial shower.

Manuel-Larason - ca. 1936 -- Mr. & Mrs. Van Manuel, Shattuck, announce the marriage of their daughter, Margaret, to Bert Larason, son of Mr. & Mrs. W. E. Larason, Mercer, Missouri. Bert is also a Ellis County rancher. The marriage took place New Year's day in the home of the bride's parents.

Johnston-Henderson - ca. 1936 -- Vivian Johnston, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. M. F. Johnston of Wellington, Kansas, and Lehman Henderson the Lambert community, and son of Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Henderson, near Cherokee, were married June 7 ca. 1936, at the Baptist Church in Alva, OK.

Hall-Cook - ca. 1936 -- Mary Grace Hall, granddaughter of Mrs. C.I. Overstreet, married Melvin Cook, son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Cook of Cherokee, Wednesday noon in the home of the bride's grandmother, Mrs. C. I. Overstreet.

Shinn-Morton - ca. 1936 -- Coral Lee Shinn, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Shinn, northwest of the city, married Harry Morton of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Hada-Dunn - June 7 ca. 1936 -- Sunday afternoon, June 7th at 4 o'clock when Margie Hada became the bride of Sam Dunn. Mr. and Mrs. Dunn will make their home at home at 724 Choctaw.

Crosser-Powers - Jule 23 ca. 1936 -- Miss Velma Crosser, daughter Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Crosser, married to Mr. Charles Powers, Waynoka, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Powers, of Freedom, is calendared for Wednesday, July 23.

Fisher-Cobb - ca. 1936 -- Married Friday evening at 7 o'clock, Miss Gertrude Fisher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Fisher of Ringwood, and Austin Cobb, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Cobb, west of Alva, in the home of the bride's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fisher, on East Center street.

Harris-Skaggs - ca. 1936 -- Miss Betty Jo Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Harris, 823 Fifth street, and Mr. R. Merritt Skaggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Skaggs, Hillsdale, were married in the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. J. P. Watkins, at Helena at 2 p.m. Sunday.

She graduated from the Coldwater high school in 1937 and attended N.S.T.C. Mr. Rackley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Rackley, 1002 W. Barnes, Alva, Okla. He is employed by the Railways Ice Co.

Johnson-Whiteneck - April 23, 1939 - Vows Are Read -- On Sunday, April 23, Miss Edna Johnson became the bride of Alpha Whiteneck, in an impressive ceremony in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Johnson. The vows were read at 4 o'clock by the Rev. Johnson of Waynoka.
