NW Oklahoma Marriages
(1940s thru 1950)

This 200+ page scrapbook of NW Oklahoma marriages from the early 1930's thru 1945 was kept by a lady named, Dolly Carlson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carlson. She is deceased now.

Most of the marriage write-ups only had the year penciled above each of them. Some had no date. I am assuming that most of them were taken from the local Alva papers, but there are some from Wichita papers and Springfield, Colorado.

Farrell-Irons - Thursday, 1940 - Miss Lucille Farrell Wed to Perry Irons In Impressive Ceremony Thursday - Uniting two well-known Alva families was the marriage of Miss Claudia Lucille Farrell and Perry Irons at 7 o'clock Thursday evening. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Farrell while Mr. Irons is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Irons.

Sims-Rush - Saturday, June 8, 1940, Enid, Okla. - Marriage of June 8 Is Announced - Miss Modean Sims was married to Donald Rush Saturday evening, June 8, in Enid at the Study of Rev. James Sours, Central Christian church. Mrs. Rush is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sims of Waurika, Okla. Mr. Rush is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Rush, Alva, Okla.

Keys-Torn - June 22, 1940, Oklahoma City, OK - Second Member of Quadruplets To Marry June 22 - Hollie, Okla. May 31 (1940) - The Keys quadruplets are about to lose a second member of their famous quartet via the wedding route. Announcement has been made here that Roberta Keys will marry Roland S. Torn of Canton, Tex., June 22 in the First Baptist church in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Fowler; Miss Leota Keys, speech instructor at Baptist Academy, San Marcos, Tex.; and Miss Mary Keys, teacher in the Edmond high school, will be members of Roberta's bridal party. The quads are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Flake M. Keys of Oklahoma City, former residents of Hollis. Robert's husband-to-be is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Torn of Taylor, Tex.

Sanders-Shaefer - Thursday, June 26, 1940, Alva, Okla. - Gloria Sanders, Oscar Schaefer Wed Thursday - A wedding of interest to their many friends is that of Miss Gloria Lee Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Sanders, of San Diego, California, and Oscar W. Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schaefer, Alva. The wedding vows were exchanged Thursday morning, June 26 at the Lutheran church of Alva. Rev. Otto Hoyer officiated, with members of the immediate family present.

McConnell-Thomas, Jr. - July 16, 1940, Anniston, Ala. - Florence McConnell, Arthur Thomas, Jr. Exchange Vows - Married, July 16, in Anniston, Ala., were Miss Florence McConnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira E. McConnell of Topeka, and Arthur Thomas, Jr. Mrs. Thomas is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bowling of Capron, Okla.

Alexander-Dunning - Saturday, ca. 1940 - Alva Girl Is Married Saturday - Mrs. Ivy Alexander, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. I. DeGeer, and Howard Dunning were united in marriage at 6 o'clock Saturday morning, at the home of the bride's parents, 613 ½ Barnes, with Rev. Knotter officiating. The single ring ceremony was used.

Haltom-Holt --Sunday, 1940 - Haltom and Holt Wedding Sunday - Of interest to their many friends was the wedding of Miss Lucille Haltom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Haltom, of Dacoma, and Alfred Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Holt, Alva. The wedding was solemnized at Hopeton, Okla., Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F. T. Benner of the Pilgrim Holiness church officiated.

Brunken-Kletke -- Sunday, 1940, Lahoma, Okla. - Brunken-Kletke Vows Read - At an impressive wedding ceremony Sunday Miss Mildred Brunken, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Brunken of Lahoma and Martin Kletke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kletke were married at the Lutheran church in Lahoma. The Rev. Phillip Rosel read the double ring ceremony, before an altar banked by baskets of garden flowers and lighted by tall white candles.

Kingsbury-Gore - June 14, 1940, Oklahoma - Wedding Bells - printed in The Monitor, Mosquero, N. M. - A wedding of much interest to this community was revealed here early this week when the story got out that a prominent Mosquero young couple, Miss Helen Kingsbury and Sidney Faye Gore had been married since last June 14. They were married in an Oklahoma town and the ceremony was witnessed by a close friend of two. They blushingly admitted that the story was true. Congratulations, classmates!

Boyce-Schaefer - Sunday, July 14, 1940, Alva, Oklahoma - Miss Boyce Becomes Bride of Andrew Schaefer Sunday - Ceremony Sunday at First Baptist Church For Local People - Dr. Langley Officiates - In a quiet ceremony Sunday evening at the close of the services in the First Baptist Church, Miss Ruth Ida Boyce, daughter of Mrs. Faye O. Boyce, 705 Fifth Street, became the bride of Andrew A. Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schaefer, Alva.

Cherry-Overall, III - August 7, 1940, Las Vegas - Former Alva Girl Married - At a prettily appointed tea, Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Cherry announced the marriage of their daughter, Dorothy Elizabeth, to John Breckenridge Overall,Third, which occurred August 7th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Spellman-Ball - September 6, 1940, Butler, PA - Out-of-Town Wedding Announced - Mr. and Mrs. William G. Spellman of Butler, Pennsylvania, announce the wedding of their daughter, Helen Geraldine Spellman to Mr. Thomas Benton Ball 2nd, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas Ball of Vici, Okla. The simple ceremony was solemnized at 11 o'clock, September 6th, in the rectory of the Saint Pauls Church of Butler, Pa., by the Reverend Father P. K. Collins. Only a few close friends and relatives were present.

Smith-O'Day - Saturday, September 7, 1940 - Daughter of Local People Is Married - Mr. and Mrs. Hall Smith of Alva announce the marriage of their daughter, Genevieve, to Mr. Jerry J. O'Day, San Francisco aviator, after a plane trip to Reno, Nevada. Mrs. Hall was a resident of Los Angeles. She and her husband flew to Reno for the ceremony last Saturday, September 7.

Main-Bassett - Sunday, September 8, 1940 - Main-Bassett Vows Are Read - Of interest to the people of Alva is the marriage announcement of Miss Mary Maxine Main, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Main, Cherokee, and William Richard Bassett, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Bassett, Norman, formerly of Alva.

Manning-Long - Sunday, September 16, 1940 - Manning-Long Vows Read Sunday, Sept. 16 - Of particular interest to their many friends is the announcement of the marriage of Miss Hazel Manning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Manning of Avard, Okla., and Mr. Eugene Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Long of Enid, Okla, which was performed Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. September 16, By Rev. Ray Vaughan at the Christian Church parsonage in Alva, Oklahoma.

Wedel-Sidman - Sunday, October 20, 1940, Goltry, Okla. - Wedel-Sidman Vows Read At Pretty Ceremony - Miss Ruby Wedel, Goltry, and Jack E. Sidman, Alva, were married I the Zoar Mennonite Church at Goltry, with the minister, the Rev. J. W. Bergen, officiating, in the evening at 7 o'clock on October 20.

Walker-Tanner - October27, 1940, Alva, Okla. - Miss Walker and Mr. Tanner To Be Married This Afternoon - Of interest to a wide circle of friends, is the marriage of Miss Irene Walker of Alva, daughter of Mrs. Wyrick Walker of Wichita, and Mr. Brette M. Tanner, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Tanner, Alva, which will be solemnized this afternoon at four o'clock in the First Methodist church of Alva.

Sartin-Clayton - October 30, 1940, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Sartin-Clayton Vows To Be Read Soon - The marriage of Miss Charlotte Ann Sartin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Sartin, and Mr. Harry Clayton, son of Mrs. Trell Stillwell, will take place October 30, at St. Pauls Episcopal Catherdral at Oklahoma City.

Shafer-Smith - Friday, 1940 - Miss Shafer Becomes Bride of J. B. Smith - Simplicity throughout characterized the ceremony Friday morning when Miss Lillian Shafer, of Alva, exchanged wedding vows with J. B. Smith, also of Alva. Reverend A. L. Williams, of the United Brethren church, officiated at the simple and impressive ceremony. Mrs. Agnes Shafer, Miss Eva Grace Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Reneau, witnessed the beautiful service.

Earnest-Miner - Friday, 1940 - Opal Mae Earnest, John Miner, Jr. Are Married Friday - Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Earnest announce the marriage of their daughter, Opal Mae, to John Miner, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Miner of Alva. The wedding vows were read at 6:30 Friday evening in the Presbyterian manse with Rev. L. T. Knotter officiating.

Yoeman-LaPlante -- Tuesday, 1940 - Yoeman-LaPlante Vows Are Taken - In a simple service in Sacred Heart Rectory at eight o'clock this morning, Miss Ruth Yoeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Yoeman, 1005 Church and Mr. Gideon La Plante, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph D. La Plante, Wichita, Kans., were untied in marriage, Rev. Father Claus performed the ceremony.

Hall-Anderson -- Saturday, June 1, 1940 - Hall-Anderson Rites Are Held - A wedding of interest to their many friends in this section of the state occurred Saturday at noon when Miss Louise Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hall, Lookout and Joseph Ward Anderson, son of Mrs. J. W. Anderson, 1017 Barnes, Alva, were united in marriage. The vows were read in the home of Rev. Mosier, pastor of the First Baptist church, Laverne, Okla.

Mack-Smith -- June 15, 1940 - J. B. Smith, Jr. Marries In South Carolina - The wedding of Miss Louise Evangeline Mack, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Jacob Arthur Mack, of the Crescent, to Dr. Jaroud Benonia Smith, Jr., N.S. N., of Alva, Oklahoma, and Charleston, took place at 5:30 o'clock June 15 in St. Phillip's Protestant Episcopal church. With the Rev. Merritt F. Williams, rector, officiating.

Gallon-Rose -Saturday, June 17, 1940, Alva, Oklahoma - Gallon-Rose Nuptials Are Solemnized On Saturday - The Methodist parsonage was the scene of a charming wedding service at one o'clock on Saturday when Miss Dorothy Rose Gallon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Gallon, became the bride of Ralph G. Rose, Jr. Mr. Rose is a graduate of Alva high school and is now employed by the Seismograph Service Corporation in Ardmore.

Lamont-Adams - August 14, 1940, Alva, Oklahoma - Mary Lois Lamont Weds Clifford Adams In Church - Miss Mary Lois Lamont, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lamont, 621 Church, Alva, will become the bride of Clifford Emerson Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Adams of Wakita, Oklahoma in an impressive ceremony tonight at the Methodist church at 8:00 p.m. Rev. G. A. Parkhurst, pastor, will read the wedding vows, using the single ring ceremony.

Zeidler-Archer - Wednesday, August 14, 1940, Girard, Kansas - Former Freedom Boy Weds Popular Girl At Girard, Kans. - The wedding of Miss Helen Zeidler, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. O. W. Zeidler and Mr. Ellis C. Archer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emile Archer of Freedom, Okla., took place last Wednesday in the Methodist church at Girard, Kansas. Rev. Zeidler, father of the bride, read the double ring ceremony at 8:00 o'clock.

Rauh-Kletke - Sunday, January 21, 1940 - Church Vows Unite Couple - A pretty afternoon ceremony in the Lutheran church today will mark the marriage of Miss Margaret Rauh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Rauh, southeast of Alva, and Roland Kletke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kletke of Alva.

Templin-Applebaugh - January 23, 1940 - Church Ceremony Tuesday Evening Joins Young Couple - One of the most beautiful weddings of the year was the marriage Tuesday of Miss F. Allene Templin, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. O. E. Templin, and Ray E. Applebaugh, son of Mrs. Myrtle Applebaugh of Salina, Kans.

Pennington-Higginbotham - Sunday, February 25, 1940 - Alva Couple Will Marry - A pretty, simple church ceremony will mark the marriage this afternoon of Miss Viola Pennington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Pennington, and Harvey Higginbotham, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Higginbotham.

Lindley-Kessinger - Sunday, March 24, 1940 - Wedding Held Easter Sunday - At a Pretty Easter Wedding attended by members of the two immediate families and a few close friends, Miss Jennilee Lindley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Lindley, became the bride of Paul Kessinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kessinger of Alva.

Hadwiger-Weigand -Sunday, Spring, 1940 - Wedding Vows Exchanged - Miss Ruth Hadwiger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hadwiger, became the bride of Harvey Weigand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Weigand, Sr., in a ceremony at the home of the bride's parents at 4:30 Sunday afternoon. Reverend W. A. Keller officiated at the ceremony. The vows were exchanged in the presence of the immediate family and intimate friends.

Rives-Walton - May 8, 1940 - Marriage Announcement Is Received - Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Rives, of Kansas City, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Hazel, to Mr. Arley Walton of Alva, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sid P. Walton.

Shafer-Haney - May 31, 1940 - Miss Shafer Weds Byron Haney - A pretty candle light service in the First Presbyterian church in Ferguson, Mo., marked the marriage of Miss Joyce Shafer of Ferguson, daughter of Mrs. Anton Shafer of Alva, to Byron E. Haney, also of Ferguson.

Fulton-Noah -- June 15, 1940, Saturday - Lorraine Fulton and Clay Noah To Wed - Announcement has been received in Alva of the coming marriage of Miss Lorraine Fulton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Fulton of Los Angeles, former residents of Alva, and Clay Noah, formerly of Alva, son of Mrs. Musia Maxey of Los Angeles.

Griffith-Simms - Monday, 1940 - Simms-Griffith Wedding Is Solemnized at Woodward - Miss Amora Griffith, of Buffalo, and Herman Simms, of Alva, were married Monday evening at Woodward by the Rev. Fred J. Johnson, pastor of the United Brethren church there. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Griffith, of Buffalo. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Simms

Thompson-Marcy - Friday, 1940 - Lenore Thompson and Fred Marcy Married Friday Mr. and Mrs. Earnest G. Thompson of Helena, announce the marriage of their daughter Lenore, to Fred E. Marcy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Burton E. Marcy of Topeka, Kans. The wedding vows were read Friday night at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. George Parkhurst officiating.

Kish-Polson - Saturday, ca 1940 -Miss Emma Kish Is The Bride of Rodney Polson - A marriage of interest to the people of Alva is that of Miss Emma Kish, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Kish, and Mr. Rodney Polson, son of Mrs. Mary Polson, Wichita. The single ring ceremony was read Saturday morning at nine-thirty in the Sacred Heart church with Father Leo Claus officiating.

Healy-Beller - September 21, 1940, Bueyeros, NM - (written by Bueyeros Correspondent) - Emmett Healy, of Wichita, Kans. and Miss Theresa Beller, Bueyeros, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony at 9 o'clock on the morning of September 21 at Bueyeros church, Rev. Fr. G. Patrick Smith officiating.

Oldham-Leach - Sunday, October 20, 1940 - Pretty Sunday Rites Unite Young Couple - Miss Verna Maxine Oldham, daughter of Mrs. Oliver Pinkney Oldham, became the bride of Robert Hanson Leach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl G. Leach of Wellington, Kansas at a pretty ceremony Sunday afternoon, October 20, at 4 o'clock in the First Presbyterian Chapel of Alva, Oklahoma. Rev. Ray Vaughan was assisted by Rev. L. T. Knotter of the First Presbyterian church.

Montgomery-Frieden (sic) - Friday, November 22, 1940 - Montgomery-Frieden Engagement Announced - Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Montgomery, 804 Barnes Avenue, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Electa Lee, to Dale E. Freiden (sic), son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Freiden of Burlington, Okla. The wedding will take place on Friday, November 22, at 7:00 in the home of the bride's parents.

Smith-Dale - Saturday, November 23, 1940 - Smith-Dale Marriage Announced - Mr. and Mrs. Melvin T. Smith, 910 Locust, announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen Marie, to Stephen Homer Dale, son of Stephen M. Dale of Follette, Texas. The marriage took place Saturday night, November 23, in the parsonage of the Christian church with Rev. Ray Vaughan of the Christian church officiating.

Dautel-Eutsler - Saturday, December 7, 1940 - Dautel- Eutsler Marriage Announced - Of interest to their many friends is the marriage of Miss Betty Jo Dautel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Dautel, 818 Normal Street and Mr. Bradford Eutsler, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Eutsler.

Price-Langley - 1941, Abilene, Texas - Engagement Is Announced - Rev. and Mrs. John Price, Coahoma, Texas, wish to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Patty Jeane, to Fred Langley, son of Dr. and Mrs. M. F. Langley, Alva. The wedding will take place in the First Methodist church of Abilene with Rev. Price reading the ceremony.

Nida-Hall - Sunday, 1941, Alva, Okla. - Miss Betty Jean Nida and Eldon Hall are Married In Impressive Ceremony - In an impressive ceremony solemnized Sunday, afternoon at four o'clock in the home of the bride's parents, Miss Betty Jean Nida, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Nida, became the bride of Eldon Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hall of Alva. The Rev. M. F. Langley of the First Baptist church read the single ring ceremony before an improvised altar banked with gladioli.

Graves-Arganbright - Saturday, 1941 - Vows Are Read For Miss Graves and Mr. Arganbright - Before an altar banked with yellow and white mums and fern, Miss Madeline Graves, daughter of J. R. Graves, Sentinel, Oklahoma, became the bride of Billy M. Arganbright, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Arganbright, Alva, Saturday evening at the First Methodist church, Sentinel.

Miner-Lockhart -- Thursday, January 1, 1941 - Miss Doris Miner Is the Bride of Walter Lockhart Thursday - In an impressive candlelight ceremony, Thursday, January 1, at the home of the bride's parents, Miss Doris Miner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Miner of Alva, became the bride of Walter Lockhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Lockhart, Dacoma, Oklahoma.

Bourne-Richey - February, ca. 1941, Alva, Okla. - Miss Florine Bourne Is the Bride of Billy Lee Richey - A marriage of interest to their friends in Alva is that of Miss Florine Bourne, of Ames, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Bourne to Billy Lee Richey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Richey, Alva. The marriage vows were read February 1, in the Wesleyan Methodist church with Rev. Charles Wilson, officiating.

Barta-May -February 12, 1941, Salt Lake City, Utah - Miss Anna Rose Barta - Edward S. May Are Married In Pretty Ceremony - In a pretty ceremony February 21, Miss Anna Rose Barta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Barta, Salt Lake city, Utah, became the bride of Edward S. May, Salt Lake city, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley W. May, Alva. The wedding was solemnized in the Edgehill Tea Garden at Salt Lake City, with Fred W. Schwendlman officiating.

McConaha-Andrew - February 14, 1941 - McConaha-Andrew vows Are Taken February 14 - A marriage of interest to their many friends is that of Miss Marjorie McConaha, Alva, and Milton Andrew, Alva, son of Mrs. Ella Andrew of Amorita. The marriage took place February 14 in the First Christian church, Cherokee, with Rev. W. A. Keller, pastor, reading the ceremony.

Estle-Carl - Saturday, April 4, 1941, Buffalo, Okla. - Marriage of April 4 Announced Here - Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Opal Estle to Virgil Carl which took place Saturday, April 4, in the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Carl of Buffalo. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Carrie Estle and Mr. C. E. Estle of Alva.

Richards-Welsch - Easter Sunday, April 5, 1941, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey - Irma Richards, Glenn Welsch Are Married - Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Richards of Arnett, Okla., announce the marriage of their daughter, Irma Richards, to Lt. Glenn A. Welsch of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, on Easter Sunday, April 5. The ceremony was performed at the Post Chapel at 4:00 p.m. by Chaplain W. H. Teed of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

Grant Rollinn Davis, Mathon Field, Tucson, Arizona, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Rollinn, Caney, Kansas, June 13, at Tucson, in the Methodist church parsonage. The couple is at home at Tucson.

Brunsteter-Heap - Saturday, July 28, 1941, Ashland, Kans. - Marriage of Miss Billie Lou Brunsteter and Paul Heap - nnounced at Pretty Party Here Saturday - Vows Solemnized At Ashland, Kan., Last July 28 - The announcement of the marriage of Miss Billie Lou Brunsteter, Alva, and Mr. Paul Heap, Tulsa, which was solemnized July 28, 1941, at Ashland, Kansas, came as a pleasant surprise to the guests who were entertained at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Del Brunsteter, 1320 Locust, Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Heap is now attending the University of Oklahoma, where she is a senior in the school of business administration and a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Mr. Heap is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Heap, 1220 S. Victor, Tulsa, and is a junior in the school of architectural engineering at the University of Oklahoma.

Robert Weller are Married in Pretty Ceremony Tuesday - In a pretty ceremony Tuesday evening, July 29, at eight o'clock, Miss Clara Hoyer, of Alva, became the bride of Rev.
